China Study Tour (May 2009) The Asian Studies Program and the McDonough Leadership Program will organize a collaborative two-week China study tour in May 2009. The main theme of the study tour is to investigate the environmental problems and the massive human resettlement issues confronting the People's Republic of China, both resulting from the construction of the controversial Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, the world's biggest dam. The tour will meet with government officials, local residents, scientists, and critics of the Three Gorges project, and will discuss with them these issues of concern. The tour will cruise down the Yangtze River, the third longest river in the world, and witness what the project has done to the Chinese people and the Yangtze. The investigation of China's water projects will include a visit to the UN world cultural heritage protection site, Dujiang River Dyke, a great irrigation project built in 256 BCE and still in use. The tour also will visit a number of fascinating cultural heritage sites and national treasures, such as the Wenshu Buddhist temple, the Qingyuangong Taosit temple, the Leshan Giant Buddha, the world's largest Buddhist sculpture carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers. (The Leshan Giant Buddha is in danger because of air pollution.) A high point of the study tour is the visit to the Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding. These adorable pandas warm everyone's heart! The tour is followed by an optional post-program 3-day sightseeing trip in Beijing. The study tour is open to all MC community members, students, faculty, and staff. Please contact Dr. Luding Tong at tongu@marietta.edu with any questions. |
