Ghana Service Project

Dr. Ena Vulor, associated professor of French and chair of the Department of Modern Languages, organized and led a service project to her native country, Ghana. The group had 15 participants, including leadership students and some faculty/staff from the College. The main goal of the project was to set up a computer laboratory in a primary school at Gbi-Kpoeta in the Volta Region. Gary Bosworth, MC Information Technology PC Technician, trained the teachers and served as the assistant tour leader. The group donated 15 laptops to the new computer lab. Aside from the service component of the trip, the students also experienced the diverse culture of Ghana and met with some key leaders.

The Ghana team donated 15 laptops to a primary school in Gbi-Kpoeta in the Volta Region. The team members helped set up the computer lab, while Gary Bosworth, MC Information Technology PC Technician, trained the teachers.

The Ghana team leader, Dr. Ena Vulor, associate professor of French and chair of the Department of Modern Languages, adds her contribution to the making of an “adinkra” - a hand-made cloth worn for special occasions such as birth (naming ceremonies). The adinkra was presented as a gift to Marietta College.

In the Classroom with the Students

While the teachers were receiving training in the computer lab, the team members covered their classes. As a local newspaper mentioned in its May 31, 2009, edition, “It was a rich cultural experience for both Marietta College students and the pupils of the school.”

Ryan Wright tested his teaching skills in the classroom.

During the trip, the team members had an opportunity to meet many local and national leaders.
