Sophomore Derek Carpenter would set a new MC record in the Hammer Throw, and finish third in the Un-scored Sparky Adams Invitational. Carpenter would break his own mark, increasing the record to 147-02 feet ( 44.87m). “I was surprised to break it again this weekend due to the fact that it was raining,” standout athlete Carpenter on the setting the new Marietta College Record. However, not only Carpenter had a good day at the Hammer Throw event, as Tiffany Kovacevich and Rachelle Cole would both set new personal highs.

The Etta Express had struggled to sweep an OAC doubleheader this season until Monday when the No. 30 (ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Poll) Pioneers traveled to Ada, Ohio. The OAC match-up against Ohio Northern was postponed twice before the Etta Express finally faced the Polar Bears on the afternoon of April 16.

The event was originally scheduled for last weekend, but is now on for this Wednesday ( April 18). Inclement weather, mainly rain, called for the postponement of this major competition, still to be held at Ohio Wesleyan. In total, 30 MC men and women will be competing in 30 of the 40 events, facing off against schools from the OAC, HCAC, NCAC and UAA.

The Pioneer Navy men had a strong showing April 6-7 at the George Washington Invitational. The regatta, held on the Potomac River at the nation’s capital, was held as a two-day event that featured dual racing. Instead of the usual heats then finals, all races were held as finals. Each team raced once on Friday then twice on Saturday.

Final Four to host all number one teams?
Stephen Howard

The 2007 NCAA Final Four Tourney is underway and will continue until April 2nd in Atlanta. The one seeds are Florida, Ohio State, Kansas, and North Carolina. Of the four Kansas has arguably the easiest road to the finals, as their only real competition in their region is the number 2 UCLA Bruins. Unlike in previous years no real Cinderella story has emerged. In fact after the opening round the only real upsets were Winthrop (over no.6 Notre Dame) and Virginia Commonwealth ( over no.6 Duke). The Second Round games will be played on march 22nd and the 23rd. With the regional finals the following days, being the 24th and 25th. You should have already one your brackets, as the competition for campus bragging rights has begun. Here is an update of how the Final Four has gone and will proceed, just in case you have yet to watch ESPN ( channel 25 in your dorm room).

Coming off of a winning weekend in Georgia, the Etta Express headed to Abilene, Texas for Spring break with a 3-0 record. Their winning streak continued with an 8-1 victory over Texas-Dallas on March 12th and again that day against host McMurry. McMurry, the only team to defeat the Pioneers in last year’s Spring Break Abilene Classic, fell to the Etta Express this time around in a 7-5 battle that included an ejection of coach Brian Brewer and a hitting rally that prompted a comeback victory late in the game.

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP; the alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m. You could easily roll over and go back to sleep, but it’s time to get ready for practice. You wake up, get dressed and eat a spoonful of peanut butter as you leave the room at 5:25 a.m. It is a 1.2 mile run to the Lindamood-Van Vooris boathouse. You begin to run and gradually wake up, getting closer to Putnam Street Bridge and finally reaching the boathouse. Everybody is standing around, stretching and preparing for a two hour row on the beautifully calm Muskingum River. At 5:45 a.m. the first crew launches from the docks and disappears into the fog.
Intramural basketball underway
Stephen Hayward
sjh001@marietta.edu
The intramural basketball games are underway, bringing in athletes and not-so athletic people from all over campus to shoot some hoops and maybe even win a game or three. The teams consist of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and even seniors all competing for bragging rights and a few laughs. Many of the fraternities have teams, including Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Tau Delta, as well as at least one sorority (Chi Omega). The game days vary from week to week, but generally occur towards the end of the week. There are two leagues, one competitive and one recreational, with 12 teams per league. Team names range from Da Squad to Sergio’s Greencard and the MC Hammers, just to name a few. The league will play until Sunday March 4th , so there is still plenty of time to see some great basketball games.

No rematch for national title
Michigan fell to the Ohio State 42-39 after a valiant second half by the Wolverines, leaving the Buckeyes in the top spot. OSU finishes the regular season undefeated and will await an opponent for the national title game.
Women's crew to overcome young team
Women’s rowing will be fighting a young crew along with strong competition in 2007. That won’t stop head coach Karen Glowacki from boosting a strong Varsity 8. But, just as the men do, the women will be going through long, tedious winter indoor workouts. The team will keep their eyes on spring break as they will begin their challenge in Palm Bay, Florida.

Football looking to closeout with a win
On their last road game of the year, the

Pioneers to a 27-14 victory over the Quakers.
The win improves Marietta to 6-3 overall and
5-3 in the OAC.

The house

The Pioneer baseball stadium recently received a name change
and is
now named in honor of former coach Don Schaly. Its a
fitting name
for the home of the Marietta baseball team, as it was Schaly
whom built
the program up over his 40 year tenure and perhaps is still a
part of
Marietta College and the Etta Express. Brian
Brewer, who
took over three years ago and lead the team to a record-tying
fourth
national championship (the previous three were won under
Schaly), was
recently named the 2006 Division III Head Coach of the Year by
his peers
(the American Baseball Association). Brewer played under Coach
Schaly
from 1990- 1993 and was assistant coach here at MC since
2000.

Softball proves there is no ‘I’ in team
There are two things about sports that always come to mind when
discussing them. Number one, in all sports, there is
the unwritten rule that there is no ‘I’ in team. And
number two, in college sports, there is a formula.
It’s year-tested and result-proven, and it rarely ever
changes.

Many people take the ability to play sports for granted. To be
able to run, shoot, swing, jump, throw,

Why Super Bowl XL is special
For every person who has ever dreamed of becoming a professional
athlete, there is usually one thing that they all have in common.
Aside from wanting a multiple-million dollar salary, fame,
respect, and admiration, there is another constant.
Almost every athlete dreams of playing for their hometown or

not become professional athletes, and in the slim event that we
do, it’s almost guaranteed that we won’t
be playing on our favorite or hometown team.

The Chicago White Sox have done what many people thought to be
impossible. They broke an 88 year drought to become
the 2005 Major League Baseball World Series Champions.
Manager Ozzie Guillen had plenty to work with this season.
Hard-hitters like Aaron Rowand, Scott Podsednik, Juan Uribe, Jermaine

Mark Buehrle, Jose Contreras, Freddy Garcia, Jon Garland and

There is no doubt that the competition is ruthless for the sport

There proved to be no difference last Saturday, as the colors of
the 10 OAC teams came together in quite an ensuing

Otterbein’s terrain in Westerville, Ohio for
the official OAC Championship race. This is the race that all the
training of the season boils down to, the final
inning, and do or die for many runners as they all vie for the
coveted crown of OAC champion. This time, however,
there was a difference, for Marietta had finally made its voice
