New MC Club looks to make a splash

Marietta College Swim Club is set for their first meet in Athens

After months of planning, discussion, and organizational meetings, the Marietta College Swim Club is finally up and swimming. The team finally came together in mid January and is now three weeks into practice.

The team is preparing for their first meet on Wednesday, March 8th, at Ohio University. They will take on the Athens Swim Club. Bill Bauer is the advisor for these hopeful Pioneers who look to the future possibility of a varsity swim team at the college. If all goes well on Wednesday’s meet and future meets, the group looks to become official; molding the Swim Club into a varsity sport.

Captains Christina Moritz and Meryl Baker started working on the organization during the Fall 2005 semester and official practice began on January 30th. There are approximately 20 members participating in the club this spring.

“It’s nice to see that all of our hard work is finally paying off now that everyone is in the water.” said Bauer.

Bauer surprised the team this week when he announced their first meet in Athens. The meet is just to get a feel for where everyone is at and add some competitive spirit to practices. All the members of the team will attend, but only sprints will be swam in order to give everyone a chance to bring in some high scoring times. Not everyone has swam competitively before, but it will offer both new and experienced swimmers the opportunity to strut their stuff in the water.

Wednesday, March 8th, marks the first meet that Marietta College will have ever taken part in. This will be a historical event for both the school and the swimmers; school records will be set in this inaugural meet.

If you are interested in joining the swim team, or would just like to practice with them, contact advisor Bill Bauer at x4768 or captains Christina Moritz and Meryl Baker. Moritz can be reached at x4163, and Baker at x3232. No prior swimming experience is required. The team is looking for swimmers with a positive attitude and willingness to work hard and have fun at the same time.
