MC inducts petro and geology hall of famers

Marietta College is inducting five alums into this year’s inaugural class of the Petroleum Engineering and Geology Hall of Fame.

Both the inductees and the newly renovated building will be celebrated at a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. on April 27 in the Edwy R. Brown Building.

This year’s inductees are Alan A. Baker ‘54, Earl E. Bender ‘31, Kevin M. Henning‘69, Elmer E. Templeton III ‘59 and David W. Worthington ’66.

After the reception, Dr. Robert Chase, chair of the department, Dr. Jean Scott, president, and Matt Peloquin, a senior petroleum student will share remarks on the newly renovated building. Construction on Brown began in May 2005 and cost the college approximately 2 million dollars.

The event will be brought to a close with a 7 p.m. dinner at Fenton Court.

Rainbow Alliance to spotlight inequalities

Rainbow Alliance is organizing ‘Silent No More’ on Thursday May 4. The day-long event is to spotlight the inequalities faced by people who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender in everyday society.

The group is currently seeking individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, to wear T-shirts featuring different issues experienced by the GLBT community. Organizers plan to hold the event annually.

The Marietta College Rainbow Alliance is a campus organization providing support for individuals and issues pertaining to sexual minorities.

Math team earns honors at ECC competition

Marietta College placed well at the 9th annual East Central Colleges’ Undergraduate Mathematics Competition at Mount Union. Two MC teams competed in the event earning second and fourth place honors.

Bao Xiaoqiu, Kevin Knoll and Kelsie McCartney Pioneers finished second overall with 73 points, while Marietta’s Harrison Potter, Matt Williamson and Phil DeOrsey finished fourth with 69 points. Hiram College won the competition with a total of 90 points.

Fifteen teams from eight colleges competed in the yearly event. Each took a three-hour exam consisting of ten math problems, which were then scored for correctness.

Students claim prizes at Michigan State design contest

Marietta College senior Kenny Cramer won tops honors in the 2006 Michigan State University Design Contest for College Students. His submission received top placement in the arts and illustration category.

Cramer was one of four MC students who received honors. He also won honorable mention in the same category.

Senior Amanda Cobb finished second in photography and also earned honorable mention in the category. Senior Stajah Lee Hoeflich earned honorable mention in arts & illustration while senior Rachel Cass picked up an honorable mention in promotions.

Psychology honorary inducts new members

Marietta College’s Psi Chi chapter, of the the National Honor Society in Psychology inducted 11 members on Tuesday, April 25.

The newest members are senior Eric Johnson, juniors Alicia Gates and Amanda Stacy, and sophomores David Borrelli, Patricia Donovan, Abby Hess, Saira Khan, Allison Paytosh, Katie Radcliff, Kayla Reiland and Lisa Siegfried.

Members are selected for their strong academic work and high standards of personal behavior.


College promotes Director of Alumni Relations

Marietta College recently promoted the Director of Alumni Relations, Hub Burton to Associate Vice President of Alumni and College Relations. The promotion is in recognition of Burton’s experience in the field and his work at the College.

Burton joined MC in Sept. 2005 and was responsible for organizing several alumni events, including homecoming and gatherings in Florida and Washington, D.C.

Prior to this, he served 12 years as the associate vice president for communications and marketing at Ohio University. There, Burton supervised media relations, publications, video production, satellite communications and the university magazine. Burton also worked collaboratively to support alumni outreach initiatives and programs.
