6 , 2005 Coffeehouse v. Coffeehouse, whats goin on here? BY JASMINE ROGERS rogerj@marietta.edu Two clubs, two different events, one namethese factors made for an interesting conundrum when the College Union Board introduced its first ever coffeehouse this year. A week later, the A & H house hosted its first coffeehouse, known as Café Ahh. Both series offer entertainment; both series are laidback environments; most importantly both series offer coffee. So what exactly sets one event apart from the other? The main difference is the act or acts each event showcases. CUB's event brings in artists from outside the campus community. Its first coffeehouse, held on September 16th, featured musicians Kat Parsons & Phil Rizzo. According the CUB board member, John Kitson, the CUB coffeehouses offer a much different atmosphere than most of the events on campus. The atmosphere was really cool. We sat down and there were candles and coffee, said Kitson. The A & H coffeehouses offer an even more personal atmosphere. Held in the A& H lobby, these coffeehouses are an open mic night of sorts. They offer a chance for students to showcase their talents and entertain each other, whether it be writing, singing, playing a musical instrument, reciting a poem, acting, or any other form of expression. Coffeehouses are very attendee driven. It enables students to share their talents with an appreciative audience, says Jason Weber of the A & H Council. Whether you prefer to sit back and relax to one of CUB's carefully chosen acts or whether you're ready to see your fellow students (and possibly yourself) take center stage, there is a coffeehouse for you. CUB's next coffeehouse featuring Javier Mendoza Band is scheduled for November 11th. The next A & H coffeehouse is planned for October 28th.
