Flag on the Play, MC students enjoy intramural flag football

BY JON MOFFETT jrm001@marietta.edu

When someone thinks about the game of football, they usually think of hardhitting, violent action that captures the hearts of millions of patrons around the world. Flag football is nothing like that.

So flag football isn’t exactly like football, but it has the foundation of the game down. Sure it lacks in any of the violent hits, and I’m sure that the millions could find something better to do than to watch it, but all the joy and fun of the game is everpresent it its little brother. The magnificent passes, spectacular catches, and graceful runs are still there, as are the brilliant defensive stops and dramatic interceptions. And although the audience isn’t really millions, Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings are never boring on campus.

The Dyson Baudo Recreation Center is currently holding an intramural flag football season. The league is made up of two divisions, the White Division and the Blue Division. The White Division consists of six teams which are Shake it Like a Polaroid, DU, the Undisputed Kings, the Brew Bomb, the RedHeaded Stepchildren, and the Tight Ends. The Blue Division consists of the Choppers, the CMasters, ATO, Holy Shirts and Pants, the Baby Seals, Forfeit, and the Fun geoneers.

Games are played at one of two locations, DU field and Parsons field, which have been transformed into makeshift football fields. The field isn’t exact though, as it measures 90 feet across and only 60 yards long with the end zones being only five yards deep in order to account for space. The season, which started on September 14 th , is just about over with only one game left on Wednesday, October 12 th until the playoffs start. Fan support is always appreciated and with the final games coming up, all are welcome to view the last of this fall spectacular. If flag football isn’t your thing, don’t worry. The DBRC will be offering intramural basketball for anyone who wants to watch or participate. And don’t worry, there won’t be any flags.
