The Marietta College Forensics team recently competed in the Ohio Forensic Association Fall Tournament. The tournament, which was held on Saturday, October 7th featured eleven schools. The schools present were Bowling Green State University, Cedarville University, Heidelberg College, Kent State University, Malone College, Marietta College, Miami University, Muskingum College, Ohio State University, Ohio University, and Otterbein College.

Marietta impressed judges and captured seven awards for five specific events. Junior Amy Bitely and freshman Chris Law came in first place for their Cinematic Duo Interpretation, and fifth place in Duo Interpretation overall. Freshman Rebecca McCollough placed third in Program Oral Interpretation. Jake Loukas, sophomore, received a second-place finish in Extemporaneous Speaking. And junior Rosa Hanks won second-place in the Persuasive Speaking event. Heather Boomer and Tim Kemble also competed for MC.

“Although it is difficult to compete this early in the season, the teaching sessions and ballots will be quite valuable as we prepare for the Wilcox Tournament,” noted Dr. Mabry O'Donnell, Professor of Communication and coach of the Forensics team.

“The Ruth A. Wilcox Forensics Invitational Tournament will be on the Marietta College campus Saturday, November 4.”

“The actual process and spirit are rather different in college forensics, but the heart is the same, and I'm so glad to get back into speech competitions,” noted McCollough.

Although the Forensics team did well in their respective events, Bitely notes that sometimes it's not all about the trophies in Forensics.

“I love this sort of tournament; it's more about networking with other teams and meeting some excellent people than about winning.”
