Todd Roeth
Assistant Professor of Art
By: Leanne McCullough

On the Record:
The Marcolian welcomes Mr. Todd Roeth, Assistant Professor of Graphic
Design, to Marietta College.
Roeth graduated from Ohio University in 2000 with a degree in Visual
Communication. From there he went on to Denver, where he worked as a
graphic designer.
While in Denver, he started researching graduate schools. His search
brought him back to OU, where he taught and obtained his Masters in
Multimedia Design in 2004.
Roeth's career is filled with other experience. He lived in Manhattan
at Times Square and worked for MTV Networks as part of their In House
Graphic Design Team.
He also taught at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara,
California. There he taught general graphic design and art classes and
decided that he wanted to teach core, central classes. That desire lead
him back to Marietta College.
Off the Record:
Roeth choose graphic design as his career path, saying I like
it because I like the process of problem solving. Every project is different;
every project makes me a little smarter.
Roeth's favorite part of graphic design is the process, or the act
of making it as opposed to the final product. For him, the
process is the product.
While at MTV, he was only one part of the entire process, and compared
his job to working in a factory. Teaching allows him to
be involved in every aspect of the process, not just one part.
In the future, Todd hopes to be relaxed and continue his
teaching career. He emphasizes that teaching helps him learn, and he
learns through discussions with his students.
Roeth's current favorite quotation is Everything is an experiment
by Tibor Kalman. He fully believes that everything can be improved,
and that one can learn from every experience.
