Oh sweet and lovely 'Lady, Be Good!'

“There’s a saying old, that love is blind. Still, I’m often told, ‘Seek and ye shall find.’ So, I’ll seek a certain lad I had in mind.” Which lad could that be? How about two lads: George Gershwin and his brother Ira Gershwin, the composer/lyricist team that wrote that song and hundreds of others? Well, if you are seeking Gershwin, then look no further then your favorite college theatre. Starting this Friday at 9:00 p.m. The Theatre at Marietta College will proudly present their production of the 1924 Gershwin hit, “Lady, Be Good!”

This production marks the second in this year’s mainstage season, and will feature a talented cast and company of about twenty and a four piece pit that will surely knock your rolled-down flapper stockings off. The production features a plethora of musical numbers ranging from a solo vocalist in “Someone to Watch over Me” to a dance duet with “I’d Rather Charleston” to a full company romp in “Fascinating Rhythm.”

The first successful musical for the Gershwin Brothers, “Lady, Be Good!,” follows the story of Dick and Susie Trevor (Joel Fenstermaker and Heather Keith) as they are evicted from their home and must rely on their cunning and the help of their lawyer, Watty Watkins (Daniel May, Jr.), to find a way make it in high society without a dollar to their name. Through out their story, they meet up with a smorgasbord of unique characters that should bring a smile to the face of even the sternest audience member.

Also, this show marks a landmark in the short history of the musical theatre program at Marietta College. This is the first show to feature actual choreography since the program’s inception in 2001. In fact, as prescribed by nearly all Gershwin scores, there is a very significant amount of dancing in this show including very entertaining full company and solo dance breaks.

“This by far the most dancing we have seen at Marietta College,” says sophomore Patrick Simone who plays hobo Jack Robinson, “and is a great start to what could be an excellent dance program.”

With the infectious melodies, comical dialogue, laughable characters, and fun dance numbers, “Lady, Be Good!” will surely capture the hearts of ay audience, and is guaranteed to have many people coming back again and again and again.

“Lady, Be Good!” opens this Friday, October 21, 2005 at 9:00 p.m. in the Freidrich theatre of the Hermann Fine Arts Center. Other show times are Saturday, October 22 at 2 and 9 p.m. and then next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m. There will be no Sunday performances either weekend. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $8 for students, and free for all Marietta College staff, faculty, and students.
