Nov. 9, 2006 The truth about MC activity fees Elysia Wright While most of us have probably at least taken note of an additional charge on our bill called the “student activities fee,” it’s unlikely that the majority of students know exactly what this fee supports, other than the general and slightly ambiguous phrase “activities for students.” Dr. Lon Vickers, Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, was able to break down exactly what this fee goes toward and also explain the necessity of the fee. Among a few of the things that the student activities fee supports are wellness programs, the recreation center, Student Senate, CUB activities, Career Services, Cdigix (a free music downloading service), the Gathering Place, the Mariettana, and even the newspaper you are reading. It is also noteworthy that the Mariettana, the school yearbook, is available free to students partially because of the student activities fee. While there are certainly other sources of money for these services, the student activities fee is one source of money that supports these services. Three student life staff positions are also supported by the fee. The salaries of these staff positions come partially from a portion of the student activities fee, and the positions are ones which directly support the student services and activities above. The salaries of professors and administrators are not paid out of the student activities fee (in general, their salaries come out of tuition). When asked why the student activities fee was necessary, Dr. Vickers felt the reason was program support. “It would be very difficult to provide the kind of support services and social programming without the student activities fee,” he noted. Dr. Vickers noted that the student activities fee can be compared to the orientation fee, which all students had to pay during their freshman orientation. Parts of this fee are also used to pay faculty who come in during the summer for various orientation purposes just the way the student activities fee is used to pay student life staff members. |
