Nov. 9, 2006 Around MC WWII Expert to speak at MC On Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11, Dr. Walter E. Grunden, the author of Secret Weapons & World War II: Japan in the Shadow of Big Science , will be making two keynote addresses during the Third Undergraduate Asian Studies Symposium at Marietta College. Grunden, an associate professor at Bowling Green State University, will be speaking on "Remembering the War in the Pacific: Problems in Historical Research in East Asia," from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Friday, Nov.10. Then at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, he will talk about "Science and War: Lessons from World War II." Both presentations will be free and open to the public and will be held in the Andrews Hall Great Room at Marietta College. MC Psychology Alumni to speak Marietta College 's Psi Chi and Psychology Club are hosting two 2005 graduates as part of the Psychology Alumni Speaker Series on Nov. 10 and Nov. 16. Psi Chi is an invitation-only honor society for students with a psychology major or minor who have completed three semesters of college, taken nine credit hours of psychology courses, maintained a 3.0 GPA both overall and in psychology courses, and rank in the upper 35 percent of their class. The Psychology Club is open to anyone with an interest in psychology. Both presentations will also be open to the public. MC recognized for Community Service Marietta College is one of 10 colleges in Ohio recognized by the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Community Service Honor Roll was an initiative that came about in response to President Bush's call to recognize college students and their respective institutions that demonstrate a commitment to service learning and civic engagement, especially in the wake of the Gulf Coast hurricanes of August 2005. Dublin Taiko Group coming to MC The Dublin Taiko Group, a highly skilled group of middle school students who perform an ancient style of drumming, are giving a special performance during the Third Undergraduate Asian Studies Symposium at Marietta College on Nov. 11. Marietta 's Asian Studies Program, in collaboration with the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business and the Marietta Honors Program, has organized the Third Undergraduate Asian Studies Symposium, which is Nov. 10-11. The symposium is designed to give undergraduate students the chance to show other students their research and to encourage growth in Asian studies programs around the U.S. The concert, which is free and open to the public, is at 7 p.m. at The Gathering Place at Marietta College. New benches outside of Thomas The patio outside Thomas Hall at Marietta College now boasts two new iron benches in memory of Robert D. Duggan, Marietta College graduate from the class of 1959, and in honor of Duggan's friend and mentor, emeritus professor Wen-Yu "Frank" Cheng. Duggan's relationship with Marietta College began in 1955. He quickly distinguishing himself as a top student, graduated with a degree in economics in 1959, and launched what would become a highly successful career in banking. He passed away on July 29, 2004. |
