Nov. 9, 2006 New Faces: Dr. Lewis Klatt Leanne McCullough On the Record: Welcome Dr. Lewis Klatt, the new Assistant Professor of English, to Marietta College. Klatt graduated in Klatt then received a second Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1998. He achieved his Doctorate in English and Creative Writing from the University of Georgia in 2003. For the next two years, he was a visiting professor at Calvin College located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Off the Record: As a campus minister at the University of Pittsburgh, Klatt was involved in conducting discussion groups. These discussion groups consisted of serious students who were heading into the law and medical profession. Klatt helped them by answering questions about how “their beliefs meshed with their particular profession.” This led Klatt in the education direction, saying that a teacher’s job is “getting students to probe a sense of self.” As an undergraduate student at Wittenberg, Klatt was a DJ at the college radio station. He worked the 4-8 am shift on Sunday mornings and said that it “wasn’t exactly the hot spot,” but he enjoyed putting the play list together. Another of Klatt’s favorite college memories is going to “Young’s Jersey Dairy.” This was a dairy located on a real farm with real cows. He and his friends would pile in the car, saying they were “going cow tipping” – going to get the “best ice cream and milkshakes.” Klatt said it was a great study break and wonderful bonding experience. The dairy was open 24 hours, and they would go at all hours of the night. When it comes to Marietta, Dr. Klatt feels it’s a “tremendous place… I love my colleagues. They are sharp and care about the students.” He also feels that students are very involved outside the classroom, saying it’s very “healthy and vibrant” and that the students here are very “well-rounded.” |
