Nov. 9, 2006 Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Patience' opens Friday Jason E. Weber In keeping with the spirit of “The Importance of Earnest,” the Marietta College theatre department will present another classic play from Modern European Dramatic literature, Gilbert and Sullivan’s “ Patience The play is a satire of the aestectic movement of which “Earnest” author, Oscar Wilde, was a part of, hence the reason for the the departments decision to produce both of those plays in this semester. The play is a story of love. The dragoons, essentially soliders, are used to easily being able to win the hearts of the women of the town. However, when they return to town on this occasion, Buthorne, the self-absorbed aesthetic played by Junior Matthew Samardge, has wooed their affections with his poetry, which could best be described in modern terms as “emo.” All the women cannot resist him, and they hang on his every word. All the women except Patience, played by Senior Heather Keith; the only woman Bunthorne seems to want. The play is a battle of aesteticism in which the characters of the play battle to be the most aestectic. The dragoons even get into that in a particularly funny number. In the traditional style of Gilbert and Sullivan, “Patience” features songs that are bouncy and a tad on the operatic side. They provide a fun look at the issue, and allow the audience many opportunities for laughter throughout the piece. The show features a dynamically large cast that works together in numerous large cast numbers that are the trademark of Gilbert and Sullivan. The cast features theatre majors and non-majors and includes freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Some of which include Heather Keith, Matthew Samarge, Patrick Simone, Daniel May, Terry Doane, Laura Horn, Daniel Clunies, and Brittney Koser. Also, unlike the usual straight plays, this show is a musical, and features a full pit orchestra with french horn, basson, flute, percussion, and others. This play is representative of the work of Gilbert and Sullivan, who are widely recognized as the fathers of the modern musical. It is a must-see and should prove to be an enjoyable experience for all who attend. The play opens this Friday night at 8:00 p.m., runs Saturday and Sunday night at 8:00 p.m., next Thursday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and closes Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2:00 p.m. It is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $8 for children and students, and as usual, free for all MC Students, Staff, Faculty, and Employees.
