Nov. 9, 2006 Shakespeare comes to MC Jessie Schmac Beginning today at 2 p.m. Marietta College will host the Ohio Shakespeare Conference. The conference is an academic meeting of scholars that has taken place all over Ohio for the last thirty years. Professors as well as graduate and undergraduate students are given the opportunity to present and hear academic papers focused on the works of William Shakespeare. “The papers cover a variety of topics ranging from the interpretation of different plays to feminist or cultural theories about the plays,” says Dr. Joe Sullivan, a Marietta College English professor who is organizing the Ohio Shakespeare Conference this weekend. The conference also gives scholars and students the opportunity to gain feedback on their papers as well as on their presentations. This is the first year that the Ohio Shakespeare Conference will be held in Marietta. “The biggest challenge in organizing the OSC has been transportation and the willingness of presenters to fly into the Columbus or Mid Ohio Valley airport,” says Sullivan. However, Sullivan feels that Marietta College is actually a very good location for a smaller conference. “The touristy industry in Marietta leaves great restaurants and lodging,” says Sullivan, “and with a beautiful campus at a beautiful time of the year, we have a great place for the conference, once you can get here.” Sullivan feels that the Ohio Shakespeare Conference is beneficial to both professors and students alike. “Usually in the classroom, professors have all the answers, but in a room full of professors all the answers can be negotiated,” Sullivan remarks. “The conference is not intended to diminish the authority of professors, but rather show it in context.” For students, Sullivan hopes the conference presentation will “encourage them to think about topics and go back and read or see some of the plays with some new insights.” The Ohio Shakespeare Conference is not just for academic audiences to enjoy. For “anyone curious about what English professors and English majors do, the conference is a good chance to find out,” says Sullivan. More information regarding the Ohio Shakespeare Conference can be found at http://www.marietta.edu/~engl/OSC/index.html. The Conference will begin today, Nov. 9 and conclude on Saturday, Nov. 11. |
