Soccer misses out on OAC playoffs

The women’s soccer team finished the season a step out of the OAC tournament after a 3-2 double-overtime victory on Oct. 28 over visiting John Carroll University in the final regular-season match. Sophomore standout Jessica Martinez led the Pioneers with two goals, including the game-winner in the 103rd minute. Freshman Jenna Freeman had two saves in the game.

The Pioneers, who completed the season with an 8-5-6 record overall and 4-2-3 in OAC play, needed at least a fourth-place conference finish to qualify for the OAC Championship Tournament. Hopes for a post-season appearance hinged on the outcome between Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington. Had B-W prevailed, Marietta would have moved into fourth place, ahead of Wilmington and into the tournament. However, Wilmington cruised past B-W with a 3-0 win and secured a berth as the fourth seed in the OAC. The Quakers later fell in the semifinal round to eventual champion Otterbein.

The men’s team faced a much more difficult season than they have in recent history. Marietta dropped the final game of the season on Oct. 28 to eventual OAC champion John Carroll University, 5-0. The Pioneers finished the season with a 2-15 record overall, 0-9 in the OAC. The Pioneers will return several young players for the 2007 season and graduate only two seniors.

Head coach Patrick Holguin and Assistant Coach Steve Rose were hopeful for the women to advance to the playoffs, but never like depending on the loss of another team to get there. Holguin and Rose are excited about the depth of talent in the youth of their rosters and the amount of experience gained this year by their younger players. They bid a fond farewell to their seniors and will look to the juniors to lead the squads in 2007. The work is not yet done for the coaching staff as they now hit the road for the recruiting season.
