Nov. 9, 2006 Are CUB events worth the money? Adam Hintz Not too long ago, the Marcolian asked some students a question regarding College Union Board’s events: Do you go, and are the events worthwhile? The result was fairly mixed, but most people reported having gone to at least one event or expressed the desire to get out to events more often. But this still begs the question: Are CUB events worth it? Is the student body getting its collective money’s worth? The answer, at least according to attendance from this semester’s events, is a resounding yes. This year’s Welcome Back Bash/Club MC featured a comedian and a musician. The two acts were exceptionally well attended by students; Josh Casey, a juggling comedian, was seen by over 200 students, and the a cappella group InPulse was seen by over 250 students. Also, this year’s Family Weekend was a huge hit, as approximately 200 families came to MC to visit. These events were all fairly expensive, but they were also hugely successful. CUB has also put on a fairly large number of events at low cost, and they have been just as well-attended. CUB’s first Bingo night in August is an example of a low budget event that brought out a lot of students, around 80 to be more precise. Open Mic Night, which took place early in September, was also a hit, bringing in more than 100 students with almost no cost. CUB’s Monday Night Football parties have brought out a large number of students and are also low-budget affairs. Homecoming, another CUB event, was a huge success. This year saw the most student organizations participate in the Homecoming festivities than ever before, and the events, which were for the most part low-budget (like Munchies on the Mall, the Cheer Competition and the Homecoming Croon), were attended by hundreds of students. The goal of CUB is to appeal to a wide variety of students with a wide variety of events. What may interest one person may not interest another, and an event that costs a thousand dollars may bring in the same number of people as an event that cost next to nothing. The bottom line is that both events are enjoyed by those that come out and attend them. If that’s the case, and it certainly seems to be, then no matter the cost of the program, CUB events are worth attending. |
