Nov. 30, 2006 New Faces: Marshall Kimball By Leanne McCullough On the Record: Welcome Mr. Marshall Kimball, Director of Bands and Instrumental Music to Marietta College! Kimball received his Bachelors of Art in Music and Music Education from Ohio University in 1971, followed by his Masters of Music in 1975. While at OU during his senior year, Kimball taught part time at Star Washington Local Schools in Hocking County, where he had grades K-12. Following graduation, he taught in the Athens School System as the band director from 1972-1975. From 1975-2001, Kimball was the Director of Bands and Department Chair for Marietta High School. In 1975, he retired from the public school system and started his own Music Consulting Firm. However, his life then took a “strange jog,” and he became a Certified Public Trainer and worked at the Marietta YMCA. For the past 3 years, Kimball did Adjunct work for the Music Department at Marietta College. After the passing of Dr. King, he became the Interim Band Director and was later hired for the permanent position. In addition to his teaching duties, Kimball is a music judge for marching bands, solo and ensemble, and concert band competitions throughout the country. This takes him to Indiana, South Carolina, Kentucky, Washington, and Oklahoma. Off the Record: “Go until God says no” is Kimball’s favorite quotation from one of his pastor’s sermons. He believes we all wait until we think it is the right time instead of stepping out. If God doesn’t think it’s the right time, he will shut the door. Doors started opening at Marietta College, and Kimball said, “Evidently this is where God wants me to be.” One of Kimball’s many rewarding experiences was in 1992, when he was the Band Director of Marietta High School’s “Wall of Sound.” The band went to Nationals and placed third in the AA, first in the high visual, and were ranked 9th nationally. This is important because his sons were in band at the time, and they got to “do it all together.”
