Spotlight: Holiday gifts for 2006

Jessie Schmac

The holidays have arrived. 'Tis the season for crowded stores, cranky customers, long lines, loud kids, and wrapping paper that is impossible to cut in a straight line. Let the gift ideas be the least of your worries. Here are great ideas for all your friends and family.

1. For mom

Student holiday wish list

In a random polling of students, this is what they want for Christmas:

  • Funky argyle socks
  • leatherman multi-tool
  • IPOD
  • Peace of mind
  • Apples to Apples, the game
  • Remington Jr. Typewriter
  • PS3...free
  • Straight A’s
  • A trip to Europe
  • my mom to cook me Outback Steakhouse meals
  • A VW Rabbit to race real rabbits with
  • My own bar with an endless supply of booze
  • Green Eggs and Ham...literally
  • Barbie’s body, minus the plastic
  • Money, lots and lots of money
  • To have my car featured on Pimp My Ride
  • To be a kid again

Put mom’s favorite scent in Bath & Body Works’ Winter Wonderland Basket. The gift set includes shower gel. lotion, body splash, and a scented candle. The entire gift costs $29.

2. For dad

With the winter weather approaching, make sure dad is safe on the road. Why not buy him a 119 piece auto repair tool set. The set includes:

  • 49 sockets
  • 30 bits
  • 16 hex keys
  • 12 wrenches
  • 3 pliers
  • 2 ratchets
  • 2 extensions
  • 2 spark plug sockets
  • 1 spinner handle
  • 1 hex coupler
Faculty holiday wish list

In a random polling of faculty members, this is what they want for Christmas:
  • An elevator in Thomas Hall
  • A day without excuses
  • A jet pack to get me to work
  • More hair...in the right places
  • World peace and an end to hunger
  • Diet Coke with Lime in the faculty lounge
  • For the Detroit Lions to win the Superbowl
  • A pony
  • Borders gift cards (The more, the merrier)
  • Bob Sutton’s The No Asshole Rule
  • A pool
  • For all my students to study for their finals
  • A sixth platonic solid
  • A few hours to actually surf the net for fun
  • Proper climate controls in my office
  • Water from the fountain of youth
  • A magic wand to clean up my piles

All of this for only $29.99 at Sears. Help dad keep the family safe this holiday season.

3. For grandpa

Give the retired grandpa something to occupy his time and challenge his mind. Give him The Mammoth Book of Sudoku, with over 400 new puzzles. Find it at Borders or amazon.com for $12.

4. For grandma

Surround grandma with cherished family photos. Buy her the small brass family tree frame at Things Remembered. It holds 10 hanging photo frames at only costs $25. It can also be personalized and engraved.

5. For sisters

Does your sister hoard the TV on Thursday’s? Free it up by buying her the complete first season of Grey’s Anatomy. It can be purchased at Walmart for $20. Season two is also on sale for $50.

6. For brothers

With all the video games, cds, and dvds your brother already has, it is hard finding him something new. Get him a gift card to his favorite store, like Walmart or Best Buy. He can pick whatever he wants and you avoid buying him something he already owns.

7. For boyfriend

Whether he plays sports, works in a stinky warehouse, or spends most of his time in smoke-filled bars, a quick shower doesn’t always make your boyfriend smell up to par. Get him the Acqua di Gio Gift Set at Macy’s. It comes with aftershave and cologne both for $75.

8. For girlfriend

Nothing says you love your girlfriend like a Tiffany’s blue box filled with a small Tiffany Collection heart tag pendant. The pendant comes on a 16’’ sterling silver chain. $100 is a small price to pay for such a lasting gift. Get it engraved for $25 extra.
