Michael Conte still remembered at MC

It’s been two years since Marietta College student Michael Conte passed away suddenly on his 21st birthday, November 28th, 2004. His class graduated this past May, and most of his closest friends no longer go here. There was no memorial service to commemorate him this year. It seems all that’s left now is his bench and tree outside of Erwin Hall, dedicated in his memory last year.

But I think Mikey still remains on campus. Even though he isn’t talked about as much anymore, he’s still remembered; he’s still an integral part of what Marietta College means. He was an amazing person; just ask any of the students who knew him or professors who taught him. His smile and his humor and kindness are still engraved in the minds of those he touched.

And he’s definitely still here. You can see him today when you see the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha, of which Mikey was a member. You can see him in the Student Senate, of which he was the president. You can see him in the Education Department, Mikey’s field of study. You can see him in the Leadership Program, where he excelled (Mikey was what you call a natural-born leader). You can even see him in the Residence Life staff, where Mikey was a beloved RA in Mary Beach Hall.

Even if you never knew him, if you’ve never heard of him, if you haven’t seen his bench or tree, you probably still notice him. Maybe you don’t realize it, but he’s there.

Two years ago at this time, the campus joined together in grief and support. We were all affected by Mikey’s death in one way or another, but it was the unquestioning support of the faculty, administrators, staff, and students that came together that strengthened the campus as a whole. We all were hurt, but we saw how great the Marietta College community can be when it’s tested. We were tested, but we overcame it all with a stronger spirit than before.

Mikey’s infectious spirit touched many of us here at MC, and even though we don’t hear about him as much, he’s certainly not forgotten.
