Women’s crew to overcome young team

Women’s rowing will be fighting a young crew along with strong competition in 2007. That won’t stop head coach Karen Glowacki from boosting a strong Varsity 8. But, just as the men do, the women will be going through long, tedious winter indoor workouts. The team will keep their eyes on spring break as they will begin their challenge in Palm Bay, Florida.

The women will compete in the FIT Invitational at the culmination of a week of two-a-days. The Lady Pioneers look to overtake FIT in the early season match up. The next weekend, the crew will head out to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on rival Purdue University at the MC/Purdue Challenge Cup. Marietta will then host their only home race of the season, the Marietta Invitational.

The Lady Navy will then have a week off until they either race at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J. or the George Washington Invite in Washington, D.C. Following another weekend off, the ladies will head to Rossville, Pa. to race at the Atlantic Collegiate League Sprints (ACLS). They will try to improve on their 3rd place finish in 2006. Then, the Pioneers will head to their toughest race of the year, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

The ECAC is one of the toughest races in women’s rowing. Though the race was cancelled due to weather, Glowacki Inc. hopes to improve on a fourth level final appearance in 2006. The ECAC is held in Worchester, Mass. Depending on results from the ECAC, Marietta would like to qualify for the NCAA National Championship Regatta held in Knoxville, Tenn.

So, trying to make up for a short fall season, women’s rowing will head into winter training in hopes of making a strong push throughout the spring. Challenges lie ahead for the young crew, but with hard work through the winter months, Marietta’s Lady Pioneer Navy will be a strong competitor through the 2007 spring racing season.
