It’s been a rough season for the Pioneers, falling to 5-18 (1-15 OAC) for the season after the Winter Weekend matchup against John Carroll.
John Carroll 16-7 (12-4 OAC) came in as the top team in the conference and showed the Pioneers and their fans why they are the team to beat, racking up a 41-19 lead going into halftime.
The Pioneers attempted a come-back in the second half, led by senior Matt Rucker (12 points and team high six rebounds) and Isaiah Cresap (12 points).
Not all games have been this lopsided, however, as three of the losses have been by five points or fewer. Slow starts have curtailed any win streak lately as the John Carroll loss marks the second straight game in which MC men have fallen behind early.
In 23 games this season, the Pioneer men have scored an average of 63 points, and have shot an average of 42 percent from the floor. The problem has been the meager assist to turnover ratio and allowing on average 71 points a game.
Unfortunately for the Pios, the wins on the year have been against non-conference opponents. Their single conference win came at home against Ohio Northern (72-68) on January 20 2007. The men have yet to win a game on the road and are 1-7 at home, but have gone 3-1 on a neutral court.
The leading scorer on the team has been sophomore sensation Isaiah Cresap, averaging nearly 14 points per game. Senior Matt Rucker leads the team in rebounds (six per game) and blocks with 29 this season. Rucker also puts up a modest 9 points a game and shoots at a .528 clip tops on the team.
The team has just one game remaining before the OAC Tournament. In their final appearance of the season, the Pios will face Baldwin-Wallace on Sat., Feb 17 at 3 p.m. The Baldwin-Wallace game will also host Senior Day and Dream to Read Day.
