Student Alumni Council boosts MC Pride

Marietta College’s Founder’s Day is a day in which we celebrate the beginnings of our small school. Many students have passed through this campus since it was founded in 1788, and those of us here today are just another piece of the college’s rich history. This week the Student Alumni Council hopes to instill this sense of pride in students by planning a week full of events.
Beginning this past Monday with a Gilman Theme Night appropriately titled the “Long Blue Dessert Line,” the group moved on by decorating the mall with various facts about what it means to be a Marietta College alum.
Along with a cookie sale held yesterday, the SAC hopes students will keep up the Pioneer Spirit by attending an Ice Cream Social tonight in either the McCoy Hall or Dorothy Webster Lobby at 8 p.m.
Many students were not aware of the Student Alumni Council before this week’s events, as this is its first full year at MC.
“SAC started last year when I was working for the Alumni Relations Office. The MCAA Board wanted a group of students to converse with about what life is like at MC now, and to share stories with about their experiences here,” said SAC President Ellen Doolittle.
Doolittle said that Marietta College Alumni Association Board was hoping to get to know current MC students, and there was no group on campus at that time. The MCAA provided the funding for the SAC, which now includes 30 active members.
“Our ultimate goal is to educate students about the MCAA and the benefits and many ways of staying connected to the college.
We are still young, and this week—dubbed Student Alumni Week— is an opportunity for us to tell the college community what we’re about and to celebrate what is unique about Marietta College,” said Doolittle.
The Student Alumni Council plans on holding other events this semester, including a mix ‘n mingle for graduating students during Senior Week at Austyn’s Restaurant on Front Street. Here seniors will meet with alums for career advice and some beneficial networking.
Student Alumni Week wraps up tomorrow night at the Gathering Place from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. where they will be holding a birthday party for Marietta College, complete with a birthday cake and games.
