Senior Challenge in full swing
The class of ‘07 looks to keep the tradition of giving back alive at MC

The Marietta College campus, much like many college campuses across the country, is filled with timeless traditions and events. There isn't a student at the College who is not familiar with Matriculation, Little Sibs Weekend, Homecoming, or everybody's favorite, Doo Dah Day. Students who sport the interlocking MC on their chests feel a sense of pride and unity by taking part in these events with their classmates.

Senior Challenge has been a tradition at Marietta College since 1997, when the graduating class came together and decided that it was time to make a group gift to the very campus they were getting ready to leave. This class put in place the tradition of making an initial gift to Marietta College before ever leaving campus.

This year, the Senior Challenge committee chose “Continuing the Tradition” as its theme. The main premise behind the Senior Challenge program is to display the importance of giving back to their soon-to-be alma mater.

All gifts made through the Senior Challenge program to the Marietta Fund support every area of the MC campus such as: student financial aid, scholarships, athletic programs, library resources, student life activities, classroom equipment and much more.

Senior Craig Gliva, a member of the Senior Challenge Committee, who is helping to promote the program said, “I feel that it's a way for members of our class to show the school exactly how we feel.
It's our first opportunity to give something back as a way of thanking Marietta College for giving us so much. This also allows us to pay it forward so that future classes can enjoy what our class has.”

The challenge set forth this year is for the Class of 2007 to exceed the participation rate of last year's graduating class, which was 52 percent. Previous classes have raised as much as $3,237 with a 57 percent participation rate.

But this year the Class of '07 has even higher expectations. Gliva feels that they can surpass all previous records. “I really don't see any reason why we can't get 60 percent participation or more. I would love to be in the class with the highest percentage of participation ever; it would really show that our class appreciated what Marietta did for us.”

The Marietta College Alumni Association Board has offered to match dollar-for-dollar, every gift that is received through the Senior Challenge. The total amount will then be presented in the form of a check to President Scott during the graduation ceremony in May.
Senior Challenge committee members will be promoting the program via our website: www.marietta.edu/advancement/senior.html in addition to a new “Class of 2007, “Continuing the Tradition” Facebook group page. Among other activities, the committee will be hosting a theme night at Gilman Dining Hall on March 28 to help raise awareness among the seniors for this golden opportunity to give back.

Donations in any amount are appreciated and may be made by cash, check, or credit card. Another convenient way to give is to designate all or part of your freshman room deposit to be directed to the Senior Challenge program.

According to Gliva, “What a lot of students don't remember is that when they were first enrolled at Marietta for their freshman semester, they paid a $200 room damage deposit. Upon graduation, that money will be reimbursed, less any deductions for damages. Ideally, if all students felt obliged to give part or all of that $200, we'd be in great shape.” Gliva then added, “We could completely shatter the records set by all previous classes, plus even exceed my expectations.”

To make a gift you may download a Senior Challenge pledge form from our website at www.marietta.edu/advancement/senior.html and return it to a committee member or to the Advancement Office, Campus Box B5.

Or, if you prefer, you may also make your gift online with a credit card on our secure website:
