English Department adds writing track

Beginning fall semester of 2007, literature courses will not be the only option for students looking to major or minor in English. Writing courses, equipped with a shiny new prefix and all, will make up the new Creative Writing Concentration.

Creative Writing courses will now be listed under the prefix “WRIT,” while courses focusing mainly on literature will continue to be listed under “ENGL.” Also, many of the new creative writing courses will fill the writing proficiency requirement for general education classes.
Likewise, some literature courses will still fill the writing proficiency requirement, while other literature courses will continue to fill the literature requirement for students. To be sure which classes fulfill appropriate requirements, look for a “W” or “L” next to the course name in the course listings.

Aside from the new prefix and new program, the English Department is adding two new Professional Writing Courses, Business Writing and Technical Writing. These two classes will both be listed under the ‘WRIT’ prefix and will fulfill a writing proficiency requirement for students.

Faculty members within the English Department are looking forward to the new Creative Writing Concentration. “Of course I like it, I helped put it together,” says Dr. Janet Bland, Assistant Professor of English, “I think creative writing is a growth area for liberal arts colleges, and now we can offer literature and writing courses for those students seeking to do both.”

Though many Marietta College students are unaware of the changes taking place in the English Department, the department is still hoping for the new program to be very successful and engaging for students.
With the addition of two new professional writing classes, the English Department hopes to benefit students from different majors as well as english majors.

For more information regarding the changes and new program, there will be an Open House in the Writing Center, today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Any students who cannot attend the meeting should contact Dr. Bev Hogue at x4657 or hogueb@marietta.edu for more information.
