Pioneer Navy prepares for spring

The Marietta College men’s crew team ended their winter break with a week of technical training in Orlando, Florida.  The varsity and freshman crews were happy to give up erging (indoors) to get some water rowing in.

With a goal of rowing one million meters before the Ohio Valley Indoor Sprints, the men got more than a chance to obtain the goal with a week of two-a-days.

“I’m pleased with the amount of work produced this year, particularly in comparison to last winter,” said Head Coach Chris Pucella. “We put in 60,000 more meters than last year, ending up with over 200,000 for the week.”

Winter training is important to the Pioneer Navy because it allows them a chance to get re-adjusted to water rowing. Instead of being off the water for ten weeks, the crew will be indoors for only an additional four weeks since the last water practice.

“The key to the winter training is the process of gaining the boat feel back,” said Pucella. “The week in Florida makes it easier for the guys to quickly get that feeling when we get on the water at home.”

The men have high goals in 2007 including a repeat win at the Dad Vail Champions and winning the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing

Championship for the first time since 2003, taking down rivals Michigan University, Naval Academy, and Georgetown.

“It took being so close to these crews last year for the guys to realize we can compete and win against them,” Pucella explained.
Marietta will get a chance to improve their 2006 record of 66-5 beginning at the culmination of spring break at the FIT Invitational in Palm Bay, FL.

Prior to the FIT Invitational, the Navy will put their winter training to the test at the 13th Annual Ohio Valley Indoor Rowing Championships held in Dyson Baudo, on Feb. 10.  The college events start at 12:00 p.m. with the men’s freshmen/novice open category.
