Could a fever be a cure?

One of the chief complaints on the Marietta College campus is that there isn’t “anything to do,” and while that may seem true at times, if you look hard enough, it seems there is always something going on. An example of this is Friday Night Fever, which is a new program started by the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life.

The main focus of the program is to provide MC students with something to do on Fridays. Each week, there is a different event. Some of the most popular have included: Beta Fish Giveaway, the Fashion Show after party, and BINGO. A very important part of the Friday Night Fever series of events is the sponsorship of evenings by college groups, which helps to reduce the cost to the college, meaning more funding for a longer period of time.

Ok, so you’ve got the back-story on Friday Night Fever. Sounds like a great program, right? I believe so. As a Friday Night Fever Coordinator, I am in attendance of almost every event and see the astounding number of Marietta students who come out every week for our events.

The attendance at an average Friday Night Fever will run between 65 and 100 students throughout the four-hour event. What’s the main draw? We’re not sure. Maybe it’s the free food, the new slushie machine, or possibly the fact that it’s something to do other than walk all the way downtown in the cold. I don’t really care what the reasoning is; I’m just happy that people are coming out and doing something that doesn’t revolve around alcohol, which is the cause of many problems on our campus.

We’ve seen a great year so far, and from the schedule of events that we currently have for the rest of spring semester, I think it’ll continue to be great! Our focus has recently switched from planning events to planning our recruitment efforts, as both Jessica Diaz (the other Friday Night Fever coordinator) and I will be graduating in May. We are focusing on recruiting people who either have experience or what to gain experience in event planning, advertising, and working with college students. If that sounds like you, make sure to look for more information as it is released.
