Intramural basketball underway

The intramural basketball games are underway, bringing in athletes and not-so athletic people from all over campus to shoot some hoops and maybe even win a game or three. The teams consist of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and even seniors all competing for bragging rights and a few laughs. Many of the fraternities have teams, including Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Tau Delta, as well as at least one sorority (Chi Omega). The game days vary from week to week, but generally occur towards the end of the week. There are two leagues, one competitive and one recreational, with 12 teams per league. Team names range from Da Squad to Sergio’s Greencard and the MC Hammers, just to name a few. The league will play until Sunday March 4th , so there is still plenty of time to see some great basketball games.
There have been some lopsided routs, including a 113-13 loss by a team that won’t be named, but just ask a few people and you’re bound to find out which team it was. However, many games have gone down to the wire, including a 61-60 win for the team known only as Ballin over Where’s Dupe. The standings have been pretty close, with only the MC Hammers, South Central Louisiana St. and Mudd Dawgs taking big leads near the top of their leagues. The MC Hammers began 4-0 and have yet to really stumble, while two teams started rough and haven’t quite dug themselves out of the basement, the Hootie Hotties and the Rockets.
I was able to speak to few spectators and players during a basketball game last weekend. Freshman Laura Kate Hartl comes for the excitement; “The games can get really heated, but most of the time, it’s good fun all around.” Another freshman, Julie Boyce, enjoys the competition between teams. “They [the players] really get into the game; nobody wants to lose.” These emotions and school pride are what makes intramural basketball exciting to play and even more interesting to watch. The attendance to the games by other students is growing, from only a few people at the first few games to almost 20 at last count. This may be due to some inter-campus loyalties, as fans like Julie Boyce have a few guys they follow--in Julie’s case, the Lambda Chi Choppers.
With a few games remaining, maybe it’s time you head on down to Dyson-Baudo to check out some B-Ball games and maybe even have a laugh or two. The remaining days of intramural play are scheduled for Wednesday, February 28, and Sunday, March 4. Games start at 9pm and again at 10pm on Wednesday and 7pm on Sunday, with each game lasting about an hour.
