The Marcolian also had the opportunity to speak to some MC students who have advice for other students looking for internships or jobs. Junior Allison LaRocca and Senior Dana Donchess sat down with the Marcolian to talk about their success with internships and offer their insight in the job search.

Allison LaRocca

Year: Junior

Major: Marketing & Management

Have you had an internship before? If so, where, with who, doing what?

I currently am an intern for the McDonough Center on campus. I serve as the Alumni Relations Intern for the Center and am in charge of receiving and maintaining alumni updates, planning the Program’s 20th Anniversary Reception, and am also currently working with the Career Center to coordinate alumni-student mentorships within the department.

Do you have a job set up? If so, where, with who, doing what?

I am in the process of searching and interviewing for a summer internship. I am interested specifically in marketing for a health care facility; however, any marketing experience would be a blessing. I don’t want to jinx my upcoming interview, so I won’t say anymore!

What help did you receive from the career center?

The Career Center has been a great asset to me over the past three years. They have helped tremendously with my resume and interviewing skills. I walked into the Career Center as a freshman completely overwhelmed by the idea of a resume.

With their help and also the help from Lead 340 last semester, I have been able to perfect my skills in both writing my resume and performing interviews. I have also participated in the Career Center’s “Wine, Dine, and How to Act Fine” dinner as well as their “Mix and Mingle,” both of which have helped to give me an extra boost of confidence and preparation for past interviews and those in my near future.

What was the hardest part about finding a job/internship and obtaining it?

Patience! I have been searching and applying for an internship since October, and am still unsure of where I will be in 2 months. Keeping my patience and perseverance has been a struggle, but it is all you can do. Searching for such a specific area has made my search a challenge. I know I have the skills and passion necessary and that the right opportunities will come my way if I continue to stay focused; waiting is the hardest part.

What advice would you give students who have no idea how to go about getting an internship or a job?

GO TO THE CAREER CENTER! I cannot begin to express how helpful they have been for me. Many students are unaware of how much the Career Center offers and how willing they are to help.

Whether you have no idea where you want to work or have been on 200 interviews already, they will do their best to help you realize where you want to be. Also, in addition to utilizing the Career Center, take advantage of your friends, (both from Marietta and afar) and your family’s experiences and knowledge.
