Basketball coach search underway
Coach position opened when Doug Foote resigned Feb 19

The search for a new head coach for the Pioneer men’s basketball team has been underway. The nationwide search was started immediately after the resignation of Doug Foote on Feb. 19.

Debbie Lazorik, Athletic Director, said there was a very strong interest in the coaching position with “about 126 applicants.”

This is not the first coach search to be preformed, as the women’s head volleyball position was filled previously this year. It is a thorough and intensive process that starts with the narrowing down the large pool of candidates.

This is done by sorting candidates down that fit a variety of criteria including: collegiate coaching experience, head coach experience, degrees earned, other duties they can perform and how they can contribute to the college as a whole.

Interviews with the players and other facility were completed last Friday, and the search committee met Monday. Four candidates now remain and the decision on head coach will be made promptly.

Bill Vincent, Director of the Recreation Center, commented “interviews were conducted last week and a decision should be made hopefully by Friday.”

After meeting and interviewing all four candidates, the returning team members are eager to hear of their new coach. With a new year and a new coach brings opportunities for next years team.

Lazorik wants to “identify the best candidate they can” for the position that will bring success to three crucial pieces of Marietta athletics: academics, good sportsmanship, and a higher winning percentage.

Sophomore letterman Isaiah Creasap thinks it is essential for the coach to have “a lot of positive influence and encouragement” in order to make a turn around next season.

Agreeing with Creasap, junior Adam Rockhold adds that he “wants a coach who will come into the program and build upon the foundation already here.” He goes on to state that the team needs “a change of attitude” and is convinced a new coach can do just that.

Lazorik and Vincent are confident with the four candidates remaining; any one that is chosen will be an asset to the program. More information will be provided when a final decision has been made.
