As the school year winds down, the music department is gearing up. Their concert season is right around the corner and the campus is about to be filled with music of all kinds from all directions.
Kicking things off is the Small Ensemble Recital tonight at 7:30 in the McDonough Auditorium. The recital is a showcase of the several small instrumental groups currently rehearsing on campus. Featured in the hour long performance will be the Brass Quintet, Horn Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and Woodwind Quintet.
Next up on the agenda, is the first ever Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert, this coming Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. also in the McDonough Auditorium. Under the direction of Marshall C. Kimball, director of bands and instrumental activities, the Jazz Ensemble has grown tremendously and will present this concert as the culmination of their first complete year of existence. The evening will consist of jazz music that spans from the 1920s to the present day. Several of the pieces will feature Marietta College students on solos.
"This is one of those concerts you can come and tap your toe and relax,” Kimball said of this concert. “Old favorites from the '20s and '30s will be performed as well as more contemporary selections."
After that focus swings back to the vocal program as the MC Choirs prepare to present their annual spring concert entitled, “I Dream A World.” Featuring music that they have been preparing during both spring and fall semester for their annual tour, the Concert will have two performances at two separate venues. First, on Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 they will be at Trinity Episcopal Church in Parkersburg, WV. Then, the following night, Friday April 27 at 7:30, they will be performing at the First Congregational Church on Front Street in Marietta.
If that isn't enough music, the instrumentalists will be back to round out the season with their annual Spring Band Concert to be held the following Tuesday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. on the Fenton Court of the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse. This concert will feature a variety of concert band arrangements performed by the ever-growing Marietta College Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
All of these music department concerts are free of charge and open to all Marietta College Faculty, Staff, Students, as well as the community at large.
