The event was originally scheduled for last weekend, but is now on for this Wednesday ( April 18). Inclement weather, mainly rain, called for the postponement of this major competition, still to be held at Ohio Wesleyan. In total, 30 MC men and women will be competing in 30 of the 40 events, facing off against schools from the OAC, HCAC, NCAC and UAA.
This will be a big test for the Pioneers, as the competition is assuredly going to be fierce; weather permitting, of course. Last season, the MC men placed eighth, while the women would finish tenth. Head Coach Derek Stanley and his teams are looking to build on past success, while looking forward to next season.
Competitors for Marietta College include 13 men and 17 women, many competing in multiple events. John Hull and Kevin Hazlett will compete in the 10,000 meter run, while Joseph Wynes will be taking part in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase. Zach Gray will compete in the High Jump and Triple Jump, while Derek Carpenter will compete in the shot put and hammer throw competitions. Joining Carpenter in the shot put will be Dan De Zordo and Brian Pallini, giving MC a strong shot at a first place finish in that event.
Both Pallini and De Zordo will have busy days, however, as both will compete in the hammer throw as well as an additional event. Pallini joins Chad Byers in the javelin event, while De Zordo will be throwing the discus. Josh Mickle will be in the 1,500m run, and also join Jered Mitchem, Cody Thomas and Tim Roberts to run the 4x400m relay. Mitchem will also be taking part in the 800m run, while Roberts will do the 400m Hurdles. Mike Stringer rounds out the men’s team by taking part in the 10,000m run.
The women’s team will include Rachel Forman, Danielle Altenhof, Rachelle Cole, and Tiffany Kovacevich (also in the shot put), all participating in the Hammer Throw event. Altenhof will take part in the discus throw as well, while Cole will try to place in the javelin event. In the 4x100 race, representing MC will be Joanna Farrell, Mallory Sinoski (also in the 100m Hurdles) , Christi Tims, and Jen Valentic. Both Jessi Larrison and Randi Robertson ( also running the 5, 000 meters) will compete in the 800m and 1,500m runs and in the 4x400m relay.
Joining them in the relay will be Brenda Puckett and Christi Tims. Jen Valentic and Fizzy Ramsey will compete in the Pole Vault event. Breanne Kosar will represent MC for the High Jump, while Shannon McDonald, and Kaitlin Smith and Jami Schneider will take part in the 10, 000m run. Rounding out the women’s team is Melissa Schulte who is competing in the long jump, triple jump and high jump events.
