Dr. Walker discusses changes
By Jeremy Kopp

In light of recent changes made in the Department of Communications and Media Studies, associate professor Dr. Suzanne Walker discusses the importance of these changes for students majoring in these studies.

Question: What are some of the biggest changes happening and/or being made in the fields of mass media/communications today?

Answer: Changes in technology continue to have an impact on the field. As new forms of communication and access to information (blogs, YouTube, cell phones, etc.) make the world smaller and smaller, the difference between private and public lessens. Abbreviated language that has evolved from text messaging is having an impact on perceptions of formal versus informal communication. As the means of communication changes, we have to asses what impact - if any - this has on the very nature of communication.

Q: What do you think students enrolled in mass media/communications programs should be aware of, and what should they be studying in particular to prepare for a job?

A: Because of the rapid change in technology, [students] need to learn how to learn. It is not enough to learn how to use specific technology or software; students need to understand that power comes from being able to demonstrate problem-solving skills and critical thinking.

Q: How effective do you think the course changes in the Department will be? Were there any courses or areas of study you would like to see added, or even done away with?

A: One of the most effective changes in the new majors is the addition of the cognate area. This added component allows students to individualize their major to fit their own strengths and interests. At some point I hope the department can, in collaboration with the theatre department, work towards offering a film minor.
