Marietta Community Service Day

Marietta's students and faculty will join with community members for the 13th consecutive year to conduct a clean-up effort during the annual Community Service Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 14.

Dr. Tanya Judd-Pucella, director of civic engagement at Marietta, said the College has a lofty goal this spring of wanting to provide 1,000 hours of community service.

Judd-Pucella notes that more than 200 College volunteers participated in the October Make A Difference Day, and the effort was recently recognized as one of the top 10 in the state of Ohio and is a national finalist.

Registration is from 9-9:45 a.m. in front of the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business. Anyone still interested in being involved in Community Service Day can join.

For more information, contact Tanya Judd Pucella at ext. 4490 or tj002@marietta.edu.

Dyson inducted into Hall of Excellence

Robert R. Dyson, who graduated from MC in 1968, always says Marietta College molded him into the man he is today. He reiterated his appreciation and love of his alma mater as he was inducted into the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) Hall of Excellence in Columbus, Ohio, on March 28.

Dyson was honored along with two other inductees — James M. Lawson, a Baldwin-Wallace graduate who was a leader in the civil rights movement, and Dean A. Scarborough, a Hiram graduate who is president and CEO of Avery Dennison Corp.

Dyson is the fourth Marietta alumnus so honored, joining John G. McCoy '35, Dr. Richard M. Krause '47 and Dr. Leonard M. Randolph Jr. '65. A sampling of other inductees is impressive and includes: William D. White (retired president of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs), Coretta Scott King (Founder, Martin Luther King Jr. Center), John Glenn (former astronaut and U.S. Senator), and Hal Holbrook (actor).

McCullough competes at National Novice forensics competition

Marietta College's Rebecca McCullough placed in four events at the 25th annual Novice Nationals forensics tournament at Laramie Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., on March 16-18.

McCullough's best showing was a second-place finish in Informative Speaking. She also finished seventh in Persuasive Speaking and Poetry Interpretation, and eighth in Program Oral Interpretation.

Her performance, which also included Prose Interpretation, was enough to earn Marietta College a fifth-place among the 22 Division III institutions represented in Wyoming.

Marietta College Community Baseball and Softball Days

The 9th annual Community Baseball Day will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at Don Schaly Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4 p.m.

Also taking place will be the inaugural Community Softball Day, which will occur on Saturday, April 21, at Marietta Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

For both events, gates will open one hour prior to the game. There will be free food, admission, t-shirts and events taking place for MC students as well as local community members.
