Adversity creates results for Pioneer Navy

The Pioneer Navy men and women traveled to West Lafayette, Indiana on March 23 to take on Purdue University at the 52nd annual MC/Purdue Challenge Cup. The men took a Varsity Eight and JV Eight while the women had a Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.

The men’s Varsity Eight went into the race with a temporary lineup due to the previous week’s head-on collision with Notre Dame in which senior bowman Zach Stimart was ejected from the boat, injuring his pelvic bone.

Following a tough week of practice because of a new boat and lineup, the men struggled in their first race of the season, clocking a time of 6:04.9 placing them behind Purdue (5:59.4). The victory is the first for the Boilermakers since 2001.

The JV Eight (6:07.4) also had a tough race coming up just 1.4 seconds behind Purdue (6:06.0). “We had a really close race but couldn’t take it at the end,” stated freshman stroke Andy Hazelrigg. “We need to make a few changes that we’ll work on in upcoming practices.”

On the other side, the women had a solid day of racing. Taking on Purdue with guest Drake University, the women’s Varsity Eight took third (7:20.4) behind second place Purdue (6:25.6) and winners Drake (6:22.7). The women’s Varsity Four battled for second place but came up just short clocking a time of 7:06.9 behind Purdue (7:00.4) and Drake (6:47.4).

Following a tough week in Indiana, the Pioneer Navy came back home ready for a good week of practice in preparation for the 13th Annual Marietta College Invitational held on March 31
.
Battling some ferocious current and lots of debris, the Navy hosted the Invite which included Bucknell, Mercyhurst, Cincinnati, North Park, Ohio University, and Dayton. The men entered a Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Freshman Four, and three boats in the Varsity Pair. The women entered their usual Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.

The men’s Varsity Eight had a good day of racing due mostly because of the return of Stimart and a more focused week of practice. The Varsity Eight included two heats with the top two from each going to the Grand Final and the other two racing in the Petite Final.

Marietta won the first heat, clocking a winning time of 5:11.10 in front of Mercyhurst (5:21.27) and Ohio U (5:38.19). Dayton (5:10.96) won heat two, followed by Bucknell (5:12.40) and Cincinnati (5:13.14). In the Grand Final, the Pioneer Navy dropped nearly 30 seconds, finishing in 4:44.18, ahead of runner-up Dayton (4:50.77), third place Mercyhurst (4:57.10), and fourth place Bucknell (5:03.50). The men’s JV (5:09.33) took second behind first place Mercyhurst Lightweights (5:01.10), but ahead of Bucknell (5:20.02).

In the Frosh Four, MC finished in 5:35.18, good enough for second behind Cincinnati (5:26.71), while Dayton B (5:53.80), Dayton A (5:53.81), and North Park (6:08.12) rounded out third through fifth. The final race of the day for the men was the Varsity Pair featuring second place Graham and Geyer (5:24.06), third place McIntire and Little (5:36.62), and fourth place Flanagan and Hazelrigg (5:50.30). With a time of 5:17.84, the twin brothers from Mercyhurst took first with Cincinnati rounding out the field in fifth.

A protest in the initial race of the women’s Varsity Eight resulted in the decision to re-run the race as the last race of the day. After a long afternoon of waiting for another chance, the Pioneer Navy women finally got to race and placed fourth with a time of 5:32.36. Winning the race was North Park (5:23.36), second Ohio U (5:27.95), third Mercyhurst (5:30.53), and fifth place Robert Morris (5:34.20). The highlight of the day came, once again, from the women’s Varsity Four which crossed the line nearly 30 seconds ahead of their competition. Marietta finished in 6:01.29, with Mercyhurst (6:29.95) taking second, Robert Morris (6:36.30) in third, and D’Youville (6:52.14) coming in fourth.

After some tough times in Indiana, the Pioneer Navy came home focused and ready for their only home race of the year, the 52nd annual MC Invite. The men and women look to use this past weekend as a building block for the rest of the season. Marietta’s women will be off this weekend while the men head to the nation’s capital to take on the University of Virginia on Friday and Florida Tech, Michigan University, and Cornell on Saturday.
