From doodles to masterpieces, the senior art show opens Apr. 14

As the year comes to a close, many seniors are working diligently to finish their capstone classes and projects. The students of the Art Department are making a collective push to the finish line as they prepare to open the 2007 Senior Art Show, an exhibition of the skills and talents the students of the Art Department have developed over their four years at Marietta College, on April 14, 2007.

This year's show will feature fifteen talented seniors whose work ranges from painting to graphic design.

The Graphic Design majors presenting work will be Samantha Armacost, who will be presenting a self-designed cookbook; Josh Carter, who designed an arts magazine; Ashley Deas, who undertook a packaging design; Meg Doyle, who created a design for a Euchre deck; Wenting Du, who is presenting a series of paintings; Mel Gotschall, who is also designing a magazine; Traci Huck, who is working on illustrations; Heather Phillips, also working on illustrations; Megan Vore, also presenting paintings, Chunzi Wu, who will be presenting her Flash animation; and Stacey Zatezalo, who will be displaying a series of painted skateboards.

In addition to the Graphic Design majors, four Studio Art majors will be presenting work. Corky Denny will be displaying his illustrations of the planets; Benjamin Smith will be presenting a series of his paintings; Zach Stimart will be showing ceramic pieces; and Andy Taylor will be displaying his series of self-portraits.

This presentation is the culmination of a year-long capstone process in Art. In the fall semester, the students began the process by choosing an area of concentration and a direction for their projects. Meeting twice a week for feedback from fellow students, the capstone class worked hard to complete large majorities of their pieces during the fall.
This semester, they focused on developing and setting up the show itself.

“We have come up with the theme, 'It All Started With a Doodle.'” Graphic Design major, Ashley Deas, told the Marcolian, “It's based off of the idea that our artistic careers began when we were young.”

With the show right around the corner, the students are not out of the woods yet. They have divided themselves into different committees and are working on arranging the reception, determining the placement of the pieces, and publicizing the event.

“I am very impressed by the wide variety of work that is going to be in this year's show,” Deas said, “Everyone has worked really hard, and I can't wait to see everything when it's finally hung. This has been almost a year in the making, so there is much anticipation. We're all very excited.”

The show opens Saturday, April 14, 2007 with an opening reception from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the third floor gallery of the Hermann Fine Arts Center. The exhibition will hang from then until Commencement on May 19, 2007.
