MC instructor to work at Olympic Training Center
Marietta College athletic training instructor Sarah Manspeaker will spend two weeks in June at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. Manspeaker will be a Sports Medicine Volunteer for the sporting events of that time. The sporting events that will be held at that time include track and field, archery, canoe, bobsled, softball and soccer for those with disabilities.
Manspeaker has worked with many different levels of athletics, including middle school, NCAA, and professional soccer. “I wanted to take the opportunity to work with America’s most elite athletes to create a well-rounded exposure to athletic health care,” says Manspeaker.
The volunteer program is only open to certified athletic trainers who have been practicing for at least five years. Manspeaker achieved her certificate and has been practicing long enough that she was able to send in her application for the program last fall.
“I hope to gain insight into the training regimen of our athletes and learn more about the sports that I have not worked with as of this point in my career such as bobsled, archery and disabled soccer,” says Manspeaker.
After an orientation, Manspeaker will be volunteering in the Sports Medicine Clinic of the Olympic Training Center each day that she is there. Manspeaker hopes to learn valuable information during the program.
“I hope to interact with the physicians that will be volunteering at the same time to achieve new knowledge of their specialties and treatment approaches,” says Manspeaker. “What I learn I hope to bring back and share with my colleagues and students to help broaden our program, as well as demonstrate to our students the great opportunities that are out there.”
