MC students participate in annual Informative Speech Contest

Although Marietta College is probably more well-known for its Leadership program than it is for its Communications program, MC students still take great pride in their department.

One way that faculty and students show their deep pride in the Communications department is to put the skills they’ve learned on display for others to see.

Students in each of the Fundamentals of Oral Communication classes took part in the annual Informative Speech Contest on Wednesday, March 29, and Thursday, March 30.

The contest featured 26 underclassmen, who gave speeches on topics ranging from minimum wage to health issues. Each student gave a speech, which was then judged by a panel of upperclassmen. Each speech was judged on content and style of delivery.

The preliminary round was held on Wednesday, and cut the group of 26 down to semi-finalists.

On Thursday evening, the group of semi-finalists presented their speeches again and were then cut down to the finalists. 12 students received trophies, and the top 6 earned special recognition.

Congratulations to the following students who placed in the event:

1st place: Miranda Beha
2nd place: Christina Cappadona
3rd place: Josh Gilbert
4th place: Melissa Varga
5th place: Jessica Peatee
6th place: Leslie Pyle
