Community Day: The tradition continues
Community Day joins baseball and softball for week-long event

Nine years ago, Marietta College started the Sports Promotion class. The class would revolve around organizing a fun-filled day at Marietta College’s baseball park. This event would come to be called “Community Baseball Day.”
Community Baseball Day has become a tradition at the College and with the Marietta community. People look forward to the free food, free admission, and, of course, free T-shirts. Knowing there will be entertaining activities and raffles adds an extra incentive to head out to the ballpark.
But more importantly, Community Baseball Day has brought the college and the city of Marietta together. It has become a special day for friends and family to sit back, relax, and take in some baseball.
With so much success in the past eight years, the Sports Promotion class has decided to expand Community Baseball Day by joining it with Softball. This year, the class will organize Community Day Double Play Week. By combining the two sports, the college and community will be able to experience two relaxing and enjoyable days at the ballpark.
Community Baseball Day will be held on Tuesday, April 17, and Community Softball Day will be held the following Saturday, April 21. Both games are double headers, and you can expect the thrill and fun of past Community Baseball Day’s at both events this year.
Marietta College’s Tom Perry, Director of College Relations and professor of Sports Promotion, decided with his class that Softball needed to be included in the annual celebration. This would call for a greater challenge for the students in the class, but they felt joining the sports would make a greater Community Day.
“After the great season that softball had last year, they deserve our support,” said Will Kauff, student-supervisor to the Sports Promotion class.
His fellow student-supervisor, Chris Engler, continued with, “Softball here at Marietta College has jumped out to be one of the elite teams in their conference. It is important to show them that extra push of support.”
Having multiple Community Days will not only show greater pride in Marietta College’s athletes, but it will give the school another opportunity to bond with the community. In past years, Don Schaly Stadium was filled to capacity with Marietta locals who came to take in Community Baseball Day. The Sports Promotion class hopes to see that same support at both events this year.
Understanding that there may be a challenge to get the same support for the baseball portion of Double Play Week because it falls on a weeknight, the Sports Promotion class is working to make Community Baseball Day as exciting as ever. Scheduling conflicts caused Community Day to fall on a Tuesday night instead of the traditional Saturday, but the class remains positive.
Free food will be served at 5:00 p.m. so that people on their way from work and stop and grab a bite to eat. Think of it as a free dinner and night at baseball.
Perhaps the most exciting part of Community Baseball Day this year will be the fireworks. Yes, fireworks! Because baseball double-header will continue into the evening, the Sports Promotion class thought the addition of fireworks would make for the best Community Day thus far. Thanks to a donation from the Marietta College Student Senate, a fireworks display will follow Baseball Community Day.
Community Softball Day on Saturday will continue the community fun and involvement. In keeping with the Community Day tradition, raffles and games will take place, there will be free food, and, as always, a free T-shirt. There will be different T-shirts available at Community Softball to add an extra incentive for fans to attend.
Admission will be free at both Community Days, but there will be a donation jar at the entrance to each event. The money collected will go to the Bluffton Baseball team who suffered a tragic bus accident last month. There will also be a banner that fans can sign which will be sent to the team along with the donations.
So much fun to be had at each Community Day; why not attend each event?
“We are expecting a whole slew of games and prizes for all ages to enjoy,” said Engler. “And who doesn’t love a free T-shirt?”
“It’s a chance for students from Marietta to have a break from Gilman and Izzy’s for a night and enjoy a hotdog or burger right off the grill,” commented Kauff. And besides, it’s not everyday that that burger or hotdog is prepared by a smiling Tom Perry.
Free food, free admission, free entertainment, and free T-shirts. All you need to bring is your school spirit.
So come out and support your classmates, friends, and athletic programs. Gates will open for Community Baseball Day at 3:00 p.m. on April 14. The first pitch will be at 4:00 p.m. Activities for fans will start at noon for Community Softball Day and the game will start at 1:00 p.m.
Don’t miss the fun of Community Day Double Play Week.
