MC Students Present at ASIANetwork Convention

ASIANetwork-Freeman Foundation 2006 summer research fellows Dr. Luding Tong, Jamie Gougarty, and William Sullivan gave a poster presentation, “Beyond the Wall: Investigating the Building Blocks of Contemporary Chinese Advertising,” at the 15th annual ASIANetwork Convention in Chicago on April 20-22. Dr. Tong and her student research team received a student-faculty summer research grant from ASIANetwork and the Freeman Foundation to conduct a 23-day research investigation in China on China’s advertising industry.

While in China, the research team traveled to Hong Kong, Macau, Zhuhai, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hefei. The team conducted interviews with a variety of businesses including local media corporations, global 4A and local advertising agencies, multinational corporations, and local Chinese consumers. The team also attended lectures by scholars at prestigious Chinese universities.

At the conference, their poster presentation received very positive responses from the audience at the convention. Representatives from a number of universities and colleges, such as Bard College, Colby College, SUNY at Purchase, NY, and Swarthmore College requested copies of the research products of the MC team. The products include a 40-page booklet describing the team’s study of the Chinese advertising industry and a video of the research fellows’ activities in China. School representatives indicated that they would like to use MC team’s products as models for student research at their institutions, as well as for potential teaching use.
