Lacrosse pushing to become varsity

Bad weather put a damper on spring sports at Marietta and brought even worse news to the club lacrosse season. The team had games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday last weekend; due to weather and other setbacks, the games were cancelled.

This wrapped up the 2007 season for the Pioneers ending with a record of 7-1. This was the second season for the club since the disbanding of the sport in 2004. The team is coached by Vice President of the club, Matt Englert.

This year’s team consisted of men and women playing men’s rules lacrosse. The members were: Ben Smith, Drew Fish, Colin Halloran, Joe Ropp, Chris Blauvelt, Kileen Lehman, Scott Kepins, Adam Fleming, Steven Hagenau, John Slinkard, Cory Bush (Secretary), Sean Callihan, Vlad Grecu, Jakob Loukas, Chris Gardiner, Glen McConnell (President), Grant Deken, Zach Zimmer, Keegan Haid (Treasurer), and Chris Kowatch.

The Marietta College Lacrosse Club “is dedicated to bringing the game of lacrosse to southeastern Ohio. And more importantly, we are dedicated to playing lacrosse!”
“I played on the team because I love the sport and it is under appreciated.” Bush adds, “I wanted to be part of restoring the program here at Marietta.” Blauvelt agrees, stating they want to “establish ourselves as a reputable team with a winning record.” While the season was successful, it wasn’t long, and the team is looking for more excitement and interest from the student body.

The Pioneers played against teams from Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. There biggest goal was to improve against high reputable teams.

Bush states the biggest game was “Montgomery College out of Maryland. They were a very good varsity team that was well respected down there, and we beat them 12-5.”

Eventually the long term goal is to make this club into a varsity sport again at Marietta. While it might not happen next year, Marietta wants to join the NCLL (National Club Lacrosse League) and compete in a more organized association.

While being a varsity sport would have its benefits, other members see opportunity with the club. Kileen Lehman is the lone female on the team but enjoyed the opportunity to play.
“I never felt weird playing with all guys,” Lehman states. “I just play for the love of the game and to compete.”
