Safety questioned on MC campus
I just wanted to take this time to let the rest of the campus community know about some things around the college. First of all, I just wanted to talk about the Campus Police and how unwilling they are to help with issues around campus.
For example, a couple of weeks ago a car that was parked in the McKinney Mass Media parking lot had a brick thrown through the windshield. I happen to the know the person who the car belonged to, so I helped her with the whole process. We called Campus Police and asked if they would come make out a report for us. Once again, as they have 100 times before, they proceeded to say that it is not their duty to come do this and to call the Marietta City Police. May I ask why, when the incident is on campus, that the city police have to deal with this? After thinking about it, I realized that it was raining that day and that is why Campus Police couldn’t come make a report. I’m sure they wouldn’t want to get out of their chairs and get a little wet to help out with something and ensure the safety of the campus.
Another thing I would like to point out is that there has been a “prowler” around campus recently. He has been spotted around campus at dorms, sorority house, etc. I know for a fact there have been several girls that have called Campus Police and most of the time they say “We will make sure that we patrol more”, which does absolutely nothing if the strange man is around the back of the house or dorm. I would also like to point out that Campus Police just bought a brand new Dodge Charger. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. It just seems pretty sad that’s where our tuition money is going.
It is ridiculous how sad it is that anyone affiliated with this college doesn’t even care about the safety of their students. As a student I do not feel protected whatsoever here, especially after the tragic incident at Virginia Tech. I feel that this college does not take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of its students, nor do the Campus Police even respond to half of the calls they get.

Letter to the Editor:
Fruit rolling on campus needs to stop
This is an argument that has been going on a long time at Marietta College. STOP FRUIT ROLLING. I cannot pretend that I am a wordsmith or can sway you to view things differently with eloquent words or impressive analogies; all I can do is plead that you do what is right. If, by some chance, you are not aware of what fruit rolling is I will fill you in on the details. Fruit is rolled down the hill outside Gilman and attempted to be ‘chucked’ into the storm drain in front of the Hermann Fine Arts Center.
If you are reading this, you are undoubtedly associated with the College in some way. Assuming this is true; you know that you are associated with a college that is preparing its students to be responsible citizens. Would a responsible student willingly waste food for target practice? The student handbook of Marietta College states, “It is assumed that students at Marietta College, prior to their enrollment know how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens, and that they will continue to live in a socially acceptable manner...”
Participating in something as juvenile as fruit rolling does not reflect the behavior of responsible citizens. I realize that everyone has a right to their own opinion. However fruit-rollers, consider rethinking your actions. You are not only stating your views by fruit rolling, you are reflecting the College. I do not wish to be associated with students that waste and litter.
Today, I witnessed students fruit rolling. I said, “You really shouldn’t waste food like that.” They answered, “I pay $30,000 to go here, I can do what I want!” Obviously, “rollers” suffered no repercussions for their mindless actions. There should be some punishment. After all, the College Creed calls for every student to have respect for themselves, others, and the College. Fruit rolling is not respectful. It litters Butler Street, where outsiders can see into our community from the road. Do we want to send a message that we are reckless and are okay with unsightly litter?
I take pride in the fact that I attend a college filled with supposedly friendly, thoughtful people. I would like to do my part to ensure that everyone on our campus really is as happy and thoughtful as students seem in our admissions brochures.
Like previously stated, this argument has been made a number of times. I will resubmit a letter like this every year if that is what it takes to stop fruit rolling. This is a continuing problem. Freshmen have to learn fruit rolling from someone. Therefore, now that the end of the semester is encroaching upon us, I beg you, let us all make an effort to ensure that we refrain from teaching the incoming class of 2011 about this wasteful game. Also, let us, as upperclassmen and representatives of Marietta College, put an end to this frivolous activity.
