Sophomore Derek Carpenter would set a new MC record in the Hammer Throw, and finish third in the Un-scored Sparky Adams Invitational. Carpenter would break his own mark, increasing the record to 147-02 feet ( 44.87m). “I was surprised to break it again this weekend due to the fact that it was raining,” standout athlete Carpenter on the setting the new Marietta College Record. However, not only Carpenter had a good day at the Hammer Throw event, as Tiffany Kovacevich and Rachelle Cole would both set new personal highs. Kovacevich would throw a distance of 131-03 ( 40m), while Cole threw for 129-01 (39.35m). Another season high was set in the women’s 4x400 relay, with a time of 4: 13.63, which was just over 3 seconds over the MC Record of 4:10.72. In the event were freshmen Christi Tims and Sheen Spencer along with senior Brea Gardner and sophomore Jessi Larrison. In the prior week, Marietta had its best finishes at the All-Ohio Championships, as the Men placed fifth and the women finished sixth. Highlighting the event were standout performances by Brian Pallini, Dan DeZordo, Rachel Forman and Derek Carpenter. Junior DeZordo placed first in the Discus, while Sophomore Pallini placed first in the Javelin. Carpenter would take second in the Hammer Throw with a then school record mark of 144-09 (44.12m). Senior Forman would take first in the Hammer Throw, with a mark of 136-02 (41.51m). Kovacevich would place third in the women’s shot put, while setting a new school record with a throw of 38-09.00 (11.81m).
The next meet for the team will take place Saturday May 5, for the Ohio University International at Athens. The May 13 meet with the OAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace is one Derek Carpenter has marked on his calendar. There are two last chance meets, 5/14 at Swarthmore and 5/18 at Lynchburg. These events will give a few MC athletes a chance to get into Nationals or better their placing. Carpenter hopes to “better my performances for the rest of the year”, a sentiment undoubtedly shared by the rest of the Marietta College Track and Field team. The NCAA Division III Nationals will be played May 24 through the 26, hosted by Wisconsin- Oshkosh . This has been a great season for the Track Team, as many records have fallen and a few individual championship trophies have been won.
