COMMUNITY
DAY
The college catalog describes the Sports Promotion and Public Relations
class as a course intended to "examine the various publicity, promotion,
public relations, advertising and marketing responsibilities faced by
those seeking careers in college and/or professional sports."
In addition
to building the course around the text- THE DREAM JOB: $port$ Publicity,
Promotion and Marketing by Melvin Helitzer (who spoke to the class),
Mass Media students, along with several Business and Marketing majors,
learn how to develop and implement all aspects involved in special event
planning with MC's annual Community Day. The event, held on a Saturday
in April at Pioneer Park, serves as the centerpiece for their effort.
Beginning with the development of a theme and logo, the class also designs
a special four-page insert for the Marcolian, while selling advertising
and/or seeking donations and door prizes totaling more than $6,000.
All fans the enter the park receive a gift bag, which in 2003 included
treats, plus a rally towel.
In 2003, the
class continued the tradition of taking a post-community day field trip,
traveling to a Pittsburgh Pirates- San Francisco Giants game.
