McKinney
Media Center
The
McKinney family and the Marietta College McKinney Media Center at 508
Putnam Street have been tied together since the cornerstone of the building
was first laid decades ago.
The
McKinneys were owners of the local newspaper, The Marietta Times,
from 1890 until 1974. During that time the paper operated at several
locations in downtown Marietta including a spot in the 200 block of
Putnam Street. When it came time to purchase a new press, the family
purchased land further up Putnam and built a printing facility in the
structure that now houses the Mass Media Department.
Marietta
College acquired the building after the family built new offices and
printing facilities on Channel Lane in 1969.
The
college used the building for a variety of uses, including the campus
book store, until the building was renovated and enlarged to become
the Mass Media Center in the early 1980s. The McKinneys were major supporters
of the renovation of the building.

A plaque near the front door of the
building honors the McKinneys and reads as follows:

naming this facility Marietta College recognizes a family of newspaper
publishers who contributed greatly to the enhancement of life in
this area.

management for nearly a century (1890-1982) by the McKinneys; Successively,

son William E. McKinney, and his son William C. McKinney, with their
