MC to offer students legal music, video downloads through Cdigix

Students have access to more than 800,000 songs through MusicNet

Aug. 20, 2004
Marietta College officials are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement with Cdigix (formerly operated as Cflix), a leading provider of digital entertainment and educational media curriculum for college campuses.

This agreement allows Marietta College to provide its students with legal downloadable access to more than 800,000 songs through MusicNet, as well as broadcast-quality video from leading film and TV content providers.

"We selected Cdigix in order to give the students a legal inexpensive way to download music and movies and at the same time save usage of our limited Internet bandwidth connection," said John Davis, Marietta College's Chief Information Officer. "Cdigix provides a caching server with 500 gigabytes of disk storage. This means that when a song or video is downloaded via the Internet by one person, it will be stored on the server for future requests by others."

The agreement means Cdigix will launch this fall its media services, including Ctrax (downloadable music), Cflix (video on demand) and Clabs (educational media services), at Marietta College. Cdigix is also doing this at Ohio University, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the University of Denver, Wake Forest and Yale University.

"An option that Cdigix provides is the ability to allow faculty members a means to offer video clips to their classes," Davis said. "Similar providers, such as Napster, do not offer this option. These clips are created and copyright certified by Cdigix, which in turn saves the college the time and expense of performing the copyright checking."

Cdigix conferred with each school to tailor its services to meet individual campus needs and is now working with these and other educational institutions to roll out services for the 2004-05 school year. The 2004-05 academic year is the Company's second at Yale University and third working with Wake Forest University. Cdigix initially started testing its services at Duke University in the fall of 2002, and continued the development of its services at Wake Forest, Yale and the University of Colorado-Boulder.

"As students and educational institutions live in an increasingly digital world, it is Cdigix's role to be at the forefront of delivering comprehensive, top-quality music, movies and educational content to college campuses everywhere," said Brett Goldberg, president of Cdigix. "By offering the most comprehensive suite of legally downloadable digital entertainment and educational options, including the easy-to-use features and affordability college students are looking for, we're providing a solution that works for everyone."

Cdigix focuses exclusively on the college marketplace, and provides a suite of services targeted specifically for this market. Standard Cdigix prices for campus students are $2.99 for unlimited tethered access to more than 800,000 music tracks with a Ctrax music service monthly subscription, or individual song downloads for 89 cents. Cflix entertainment programming will be available under a subscription model for $9.99 per month, or $3.99 for individual movies on a pay-per-view basis. Clabs educational course curriculum is free to enrolled students, giving them convenient access to video and audio media content required to fulfill their coursework via their own computer versus making a trip to the central campus Audio/Video lab.

Cdigix is working in collaboration with industry leaders in the music, movie, education and technology sectors to promote its offerings to schools and students as a legal and cost-effective way to access music, movie and educational media. MusicNet provides Ctrax with a subscription service and download store featuring more than 800,000 tracks, original programming, play lists and other features. Cdigix also works with Sony Music's Campus Action Network (CAN), an entertainment industry initiative dedicated to facilitating the introduction of safe, legitimate digital music services to the higher education environment.

Since 2002, Cdigix (formerly operated as Cflix) has delivered customized packages featuring legal music (Ctrax), video-on-demand programming (Cflix) and educational media (Clabs) to colleges and universities. Cdigix works with leading commercial entertainment companies and universities to provide customized music, movie and educational services to college students via institutions' internal IP infrastructures. The company is headquartered in Englewood, Colo., and more information can be found at www.cdigix.com.
