Trey Lamb is not your normal hero.

The diminutive right-handed pitcher looks more like a batboy than a standout pitcher.

However, the Marietta College sophomore proved his grit Sunday afternoon as he threw eight shutout innings to help the Etta Express defeat Allegheny (Pa.) 13-2 to win the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Pioneer Park.

The victory puts the Pioneers into the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships in Wisconsin starting Friday.

Lamb had five strikeouts and scattered nine hits to improve to 6-1 on the season. Marietta is now 44-7-1. Lamb, whose earned run average dropped to 0.86 on the season, was surprised by his outing.

"After the first inning I almost walked down to the bullpen to work on my slider," he said. "I didn't and everything worked out all right. (Catcher) Jay (Coakley) called a good game. I really trust him."

Coakley had a good game himself. The junior went 2-for-4 with seven RBIs. His seventh-inning grand slam broke the game open and also broke the school record for career home runs. He belted a three-run shot in the ninth to give him 44 for his career.

"When I hit the grand slam you could really see the air go out of them," Coakley said. "We were in a great position, needing to win one game with all of our pitchers still left."

Coakley said Lamb was the difference in the game, though.

"He had just about everything working," he said. "The first time through the lineup we didn't throw any changeups and then we started to keep them off balance."

Lamb's performance was exactly what MC coach Don Schaly expected.

"That below 1.00 ERA is not by accident," Schaly said. "He has been consistent all year. These types of outings are becoming a habit for Trey."

Lamb was in a pitching duel with Allegheny's Keith Gonzales (4-2) for the first six innings as the Pioneers managed a 1-0 lead. However, in the seventh Marietta put up seven runs. Then MC added another five in the ninth inning.

Andy Coble, Matt McLuckey, Mike Deegan and Derek Pauley each had two hits for the Pioneers. Coble, McLuckey and Pauley each had one RBI. Pauley's came in the fourth when he drove home Mike Menke, who had doubled.

Pinch hitters Kevin May and Todd Yoder each had RBI singles in the ninth inning.

Gonzales ended up taking the loss after allowing five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

The Gators also used Rob George, Marty Santek and Ben Contrucci each pitched in relief. The Gators scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth as Brian Zorman and Alan Clouse each hit solo homers off of MC reliever Jim Sharp.

Ben Couch went 2-for-5 for the Gators, while Clouse was 3-for-4. Allegheny, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 team in the nation, finishes the season with a 31-11 record.

Marietta's first World Series opponent will be Salisbury State University (31-11) on Friday, May 25 at 1:15 p.m. The 2001 Division III Championship is being held in Grand Chute, Wis. at Fox Cities Stadium.

"I'm happy for the kids and I'm happy for our fans," Schaly said.

Schaly also thanked his four senior—Kris Buirley, Mike Deegan, Todd Timmer and Menke—for keeping the young Pioneer squad focused all season.

"They are responsible for where we are," Schaly said. "This team has great leadership."
