Frequently Asked Questions

Are Campus Police Officers "real" police officers?

Campus Police Officers are police officers as outlined in Section 1713.50 of the Ohio Revised Code. As commissioned police officers of Marietta College, we receive the same training as any police officer in the State of Ohio and are granted the same powers of arrest as any police officer in the State of Ohio. We receive our training as approved by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council.

What's the difference between Campus Police Officers and Security Officers?

Campus Police employs both full-time and part-time officers. Full-time officers are commissioned police officers and have arrest powers. Part-time officers are either commissioned police officers or non-commissioned security officers.

The main difference between a commissioned officer and a non-commissioned officer while they are on campus is the fact that a security officer cannot make a physical arrest. However, a security officer can issue citations and perform duties of the full-time officer including, in extreme cases, holding a suspect of a major crime until a full-time officer can arrive on the scene.

How do I file a report?

Call Campus Police at any time and let the dispatcher know that you would like to file a report. An officer can come to your location, or you can come to the Campus Police office.

How do I get a copy of a report?

If you file a report with Campus Police, you can request a copy by stopping by our office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Most report requests will be processed within two working days.

Please note: Each request is evaluated and not all reports can be released. Reports of investigations and those containing confidential, personal or other sensitive data will not be released.

Why does the dispatcher ask for my name when I call?

It is our policy to request the names of callers for several reasons, including the possibility that we may have to contact you to get more information—especially if you are reporting a crime. Also, we cannot provide services for lockouts, vehicle services, etc. without obtaining the caller's name.

I received an annoying phone call. Should I report this?

Campus Police recommends reporting all harassing or annoying telephone calls, especially if the telephone calls are frequent, threatening or otherwise bothersome. Without a report, we have no way to track these phone calls as there is no record of telephone calls made to or from campus by CPS, the campus telephone office, or Ameritech, the local telephone company, without a report.

If I file a report, will Campus Police release my name?

By Department policy, Campus Police does not release the names of victims to the public. We may, however, refer cases to the Dean of Students office or other relevant offices on campus.

In the case of a sexual assault, Ohio law requires that a victim's name be withheld from the public, and Campus Police will only release a name if permission is given to do so.

Can I get a student employment job with Campus Police?

We rely heavily on student workers for patrol, security, dispatch and office positions. For more information, call x 4611 or stop by our offices.
