The HP ScanJet is available for your use in the Bartlett Computer lab.  This scanner is simple to use, does a reasonable job, and has text conversion capability.

To use the scanner, you must first turn it on, and turn on the computer it is attached to.  

  1. Turn on the power at the main breaker box.  The breaker for the scanner is clearly marked.  Do not turn any breakers off unless you are closing down the lab.  There is no power switch on the scanner.
  2. Boot the scanning computer normally.  Log in as "Student" .
  3. Make sure the scanner icon shows up in the system tray at the lower right corner of the screen.
  4. Once the computer is fully booted, do not use it!  You will actually be doing the scanning over the network from another computer.  You should not type or run any programs on the scanning computer.
  5. Boot another computer in the lab.
  6. Your original should be clean.  If there is any white-out on it, make sure that the white-out is dry.  Be sure the glass is clean; if it is not blow off any dust.  If there are marks or smears on the glass, clean it carefully with window cleaner and KimWipes (NOT paper towels).  These supplies are available in the lab.  

 
  1. When the original is in position, you are ready to scan. While the other computer is booting, place your original on the scanner.  It should be placed face down up against the back right corner of the glass, as shown in the image above, right.
  2. Start the scanning software by clicking on the scanning icon on the desktop of the computer you are working on (Again, NOT the computer that the scanner is attached to).
  3. The scanning window is shown to the right.  Your first step is to do a preview scan by clicking on Scan:Preview (below).

 

 
  1. The preview image will appear as shown in the image to the right.  If the original is not positioned properly, adjust it and repeat the preview scan.  If the image does not appear in color, don't worry - you will select the output type in the next step.
  2. Now, set the Output Type by clicking on that option from the menu.

 

Most of these choices are self-explanatory.  Use true color for most scans; grayscale to make smaller files if you do not need color, or 256 color for smaller scans if you do need color.  Black & White is for line art and drawings.  Text attempts to convert text on the page into editable text that you can import into a word processor.
  1. With the output type set, select the area to be scanned.  Use the mouse to draw a rectangle over the area you want to scan (hold down the left mouse button).
  1. At this point, there are two ways to make a scan.  You can either select Scan:Save As and save the file in a number of formats, or you can use the Edit:Copy menu.  If you choose the Scan:Save As, you will see the dialog shown to the right.  If you choose the Edit:Copy command, you will hear the scanner start up and make a scan.  When it is done, you can open an image-processing program such as Photoshop and do an Edit:Paste to bring the image into that program.

 

Advanced Features
In many cases, the steps above will allow you to get a good scan into your imaging program, where you can manipulate it further.  Some images, however. will present more of a problem.  A number of tools are provided with the scanner software to improve the quality of the scanned image.  All of them are available on the TOOLS menu.
  1. You can use the Exposure Adjustment Tool to adjust the brightness of the image.  Any changes you make will appear in the preview image.
  2. For color scans, you can make adjustments to the color balance using the Color Adjustment Tool.
  3. You can adjust the size of the output using the Dimensions Tool.
  4. Output resolution is controlled via the Output Resolution Tool.  Remember to set it at 72 for web use and to the resolution of the printer (at least 600) for printing.
  5. If you are scanning black and white images, you  can adjust the threshold with the Black & White Threshold Tool.  This determines what level of gray will be converted to black.  This setting can make a huge difference in scanning line art; changes made using the tool are instantly shown in the preview image.  An example of the effect that this tool has is shown below.

If you are trying to convert typed material into text that can be edited in a word processor, you can set the output type to text.  In this mode, the computer scans the paper, but instead of producing an image of the text, it converts the image to editable text.  This can save you from typing text in manually, but you should be aware of 3 real limitations:
  1. Under the best of circumstances the program is only about 95% accurate, so careful proofreading is needed.
  2. If the text is faded, or not aligned perfectly straight, there will be large gaps in the output.
  3. None of the formatting is retained, so you will have to redo all of that yourself.

Some hints on scanning text:

  1. Be sure the original is a legible as possible.
  2. Make sure the original is lined up so that the lines of text are exactly parallel to the top of the scanning frame.
  3. In some cases, it might be easier to scan in a photocopy of a book page than it is to scan in the book page directly.
  4. If you need both text and graphics from a page, you will have to scan them in separately and combine them using a word processor.
  5. Remember copyright laws when scanning the work of others.

The examples below show text scanned as an image and the converted text.  Note that the language of the text does not matter as long as the typeface is recognizable.
