Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Symphonic Wind Ensemble-MUSC 165

Open to all wind and percussion instrumentalists regardless of college major, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the principal concert band on the college campus. This Ensemble provides students with the opportunity to rehearse and perform high quality wind and percussion repertoire with emphasis on individual and group musical improvement. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs a Fall Concert and Holiday Concert during the first semester. The year is concluded with the Spring Concert in April.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble can be taken for 1 credit hour or for zero credit depending on the credit load being taken by the student. Symphonic Wind Ensemble participation can also be used as partial fulfillment of a fine arts general education requirement.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

 


 

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble provides students with the opportunity to perform a variety of jazz styles from big band to funk and everything in between. Most members of this ensemble are members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble for membership in this organization.

Instrumentation used in this ensemble includes the traditional instrumentation of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, percussion, drum set, electric guitar and electric bass.

The Jazz Ensemble performs a Fall Jazz Ensemble Concert, Holiday Concert, Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert, as well as other performances for campus and community events.

Jazz Ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

 


Small Ensemble Program

The small ensemble program is in existence to enhance the playing opportunities available to the students of Marietta College. In addition to the standing ensembles listed below, other small ensembles will be formed when student interest and instrumentation warrants.

Percussion Ensemble

Percussion Ensemble-MUSC 167

The Percussion Ensemble is open to students with interest in performing music specifically written for percussion instruments. Both melodic and membrane instruments will be used in this organization. Learning to perform on traditional and non-traditional percussion equipment will be part of this ensemble.

The Percussion Ensemble performs on a Small Ensemble Concert in both fall and spring semesters. Other performances for campus and community events are also possible.

The ensemble rehearses 1 hour per week with the rehearsal time being determined after the membership is decided.

 


 

Oboe

Woodwind Quintet-MUSC 168

Using the traditional instrumentation of flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and French horn, the membership of this ensemble is from the wind participants in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

This ensemble rehearses and perform music written specifically for the woodwind quintet, as well as transcribed compositions. This ensemble performs music representing a variety of compositional techniques, styles, and musical periods.

The Woodwind Quintet performs on a Small Ensemble Concert in both fall and spring semesters. Other performances for campus and community events are also possible.

The ensemble rehearses 1 hour per week with the rehearsal time being determined after the membership is decided.

 


 

Tuba Player

Brass Quintet-MUSC 169

Using the traditional instrumentation of 2 trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba, the membership of this ensemble is composed of brass players in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

This ensemble will rehearse and perform music written specifically for the brass quintet, as well as transcribed compositions. This ensemble performs music representing a variety of compositional techniques, styles, and musical periods.

The Brass Quintet performs on a Small Ensemble Concert in both fall and spring semesters. Other performances for campus and community events are also possible.

The ensemble rehearses 1 hour per week with the rehearsal time being determined after the membership is decided.

 


 

Horn Choir-MUSC 169

Horn choir is composed solely of French horns. The membership of this ensemble is from the French horn section in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

This ensemble will rehearse and perform music written specifically for the horn quartet, quintet and horn choirs, as well as transcribed compositions. This ensemble performs music representing a variety of compositional techniques, styles, and musical periods.

The Horn Choir performs on a Small Ensemble Concert in both fall and spring semesters. Other performances for campus and community events are also possible.

The ensemble rehearses 1 hour per week with the rehearsal time being determined after the membership is decided.

Saxophone Ensemble -MUSC 168

The Saxophone Ensemble is comprised of members of the saxophone section in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

This ensemble will rehearse and perform music specifically arranged for various combinations of saxophones. The Saxophone Ensemble performs music representing a variety of compositional techniques, styles, and musical periods.

The Saxophone Ensemble performs on a Small Ensemble Concert in both fall and spring semesters. Other performances for campus and community events are also possible.

The ensemble rehearses 1 hour per week with the rehearsal time being determined after the membership is decided.

 


 

String Ensemble

The String Ensemble is the newest ensemble to the list of instrumental ensembles. Created to give the experienced string player an opportunity to continue playing, the String Ensemble is composed entirely of non-music majors. Including violins, violas, cellos and double bass, this ensemble will rehearse one hour per week in preparation for the Small Ensemble Concert each semester.

Students interested in this ensemble must contact the Director of Bands and Instrumental Activities to express interest.

This ensemble will rehearse and perform music specifically written for the string ensemble and representing a variety of compositional techniques, styles, and musical periods.

 

 


 

Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra

Each semester the Music Department works in conjunction with the Theatre Department to produce a musical. Instrumentalists at the college are invited to perform in the orchestra for these productions. Selection of the instrumentalists for each show will be based on the score requirements of each musical. Rehearsals and performances typically cover a three week span prior to the opening of the musical.

 


 

Miscellaneous Ensembles

The small ensemble program is in existence to enhance the playing opportunities available to the students of Marietta College. Other small ensembles will be added when student interest and instrumentation warrants.
